When I look at I. M. Pei’s work, I do not see only triangles, squares, and circles.

I see a man who tried to make geometry remember.
جاء من الصين إلى أمريكا شاباً، حاملاً ثقافة قديمة إلى عالم كان يندفع نحو الحداثة.
He came from China to America as a young man, carrying an ancient culture into a world rushing toward modernity.
ولد سنة 1917، ووصل إلى الولايات المتحدة سنة 1935، ودرس في MIT ثم في Harvard Graduate School of Design. (Pritzker Prize)

لكنه لم يسمح للحداثة أن تمحو جذوره.
Yet he never allowed modernity to erase his roots.
ولم يسمح للجذور أن تمنعه من التجريب.
Nor did he allow roots to prevent experimentation.
وهنا، في رأيي، تكمن عظمة باي.
Here, in my view, lies Pei’s greatness.
كان حديثاً دون أن يكون بلا ذاكرة.
He was modern without becoming memoryless.
وكان هندسياً دون أن يكون بارداً.
He was geometric without becoming cold.
وكان عالمياً دون أن يفقد حس المكان.
He was global without losing a sense of place.
ولهذا تبدو عبارته عن ضرورة أن تكون للعمارة الدائمة جذوراً مفتاحاً مناسباً لفهم عالمه.
That is why his statement that lasting architecture must have roots offers a fitting key to understanding his world.
إنها ليست ملحمة رجل بنى متاحف وأبراجاً.
This is not merely the epic of a man who built museums and towers.

It is the epic of a man who placed a glass pyramid before a historic palace,
