Before factories became laboratories of modern architecture, many saw the factory as merely a shell around machinery.
وقبل أن نتحدث عن الهوية البصرية للشركات، كان بيتر بيرنس يحاول أن يجعل المصنع والمنتج والإعلان والخط والهوية أجزاءً من فكرة واحدة.
Before we spoke of corporate visual identity, Peter Behrens was trying to make the factory, product, advertisement, typography, and identity parts of one unified idea.

He died in Berlin in 1940.

Between those dates, an enormous transformation occurred in the world.

Cities expanded.
المصانع تضاعفت.
Factories multiplied.
الكهرباء غيرت الليل.
Electricity transformed the night.
الفولاذ والزجاج والخرسانة بدأت تغير شكل البناء.
Steel, glass, and concrete began transforming construction.
والآلة دخلت حياة الإنسان بقوة لم يعرفها من قبل.
The machine entered human life with unprecedented force.
وكان السؤال الذي واجه جيله واضحاً وخطيراً:
The question facing his generation was clear and profound:
كيف يمكن للفن أن يعيش في عصر الآلة؟
How can art survive in the age of the machine?
وأرى أن بيتر بيرنس لم يحاول الهرب من السؤال.
I believe Peter Behrens did not attempt to escape that question.
بل دخل إليه مباشرة.
He entered directly into it.
لم يقل إن علينا العودة إلى الماضي.
He did not say that we must return to the past.
ولم يقل إن الآلة ستلغي الفن.
Nor did he say that the machine would abolish art.
حاول أن يجعل الاثنين يلتقيان.
He tried to make the two meet.
وهنا تبدأ ملحمته.
And here his epic begins.
