حين أنظر إلى أعمال جان نوفيل، لا أرى معماريًا يبحث عن توقيع يضعه فوق كل مدينة.
When I look at Jean Nouvel’s work, I do not see an architect searching for a signature to stamp upon every city.
أرى معماريًا يرفض أن يجيب عن سؤال جديد بجواب قديم.
I see an architect who refuses to answer a new question with an old answer.
وهذا، بالنسبة إليّ، أهم ما يميزه.
And this, to me, is what distinguishes him most.
هناك معماريون تستطيع أن تعرف مبناهم قبل أن تعرف المدينة التي يقف فيها.
There are architects whose buildings you recognize before you recognize the city in which they stand.
نفس المنحنى.
The same curve.
نفس الحجر.
The same glass.
نفس الحركة.
The same gesture.
نفس التوقيع.
The same signature.

Therefore the architecture must also be different.

ولد جان نوفيل عام 1945 في فوميل بفرنسا.
Jean Nouvel was born in Fumel, France, in 1945.
ودخل المدرسة الوطنية العليا للفنون الجميلة في باريس سنة 1966، وتخرج منها سنة 1971.
He entered the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1966 and graduated in 1971. (Jean Nouvel)

لكنه لم يتحول إلى تابع لهما.
Yet he did not become their follower.
منذ البداية، بدا أن الرجل يريد أن يبني موقفًا أكثر من رغبته في بناء أسلوب.
From the beginning, he seemed more interested in building a position than in building a style.
موقف يقول إن العمارة لا تبدأ من الشكل.
A position that says architecture does not begin with form.

It begins with the question.

From time.
من المناخ.
From climate.
من الثقافة.
From culture.
ومن الشيء الذي لا يستطيع مكان آخر أن يقدمه.
And from that which no other place can offer.
لذلك أرى جان نوفيل معماريًا من أخطر المعماريين على فكرة الأسلوب الثابت.
That is why I see Jean Nouvel as one of the most dangerous architects to the idea of a fixed style.
لأنه يقول للمعماري:
Because he tells the architect:

If you already know what your next project will look like,
فربما لم تستمع إلى المشروع بعد.
Then perhaps you have not listened to the project yet.

This epic is not an attempt to gather Jean Nouvel’s buildings into an album.

It is an attempt to read a mind that refused to become its own prisoner.
