حين أقرأ لو كوربوزييه، لا أقرأ معماريًا واحدًا.
When I read Le Corbusier, I do not encounter only one architect.
أرى مجموعة رجال يعيشون داخل رجل واحد.
I see several men living within one man.
أرى الرسام.
I see the painter.
وأرى الكاتب.
I see the writer.
وأرى المهندس الذي أحب النظام.
I see the designer who loved order.
وأرى الشاعر الذي ترك الضوء يدخل من ثقب صغير في جدار خرساني.
And I see the poet who allowed light to enter through a small opening in a concrete wall.
أرى الرجل الذي قال إن البيت آلة للسكن.
I see the man who described the house as a machine for living.
ثم أراه في رونشان،
Then I see him at Ronchamp,
يبني مكانًا لا يمكن تفسيره بالآلة وحدها.
Building a place that no machine alone could explain.
أراه يدافع عن الخط المستقيم.
I see him defend the straight line.
ثم يجعل السقف ينحني.
Then I see him curve the roof.
أراه يضع المدينة داخل شبكة.
I see him place the city inside a grid.
ثم أراه يكتشف أن الإنسان لا يعيش داخل الهندسة وحدها.
Then I see him discover that a human being does not live inside geometry alone.
ولد شارل-إدوار جانيريه-غري سنة 1887 في سويسرا.
Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris was born in Switzerland in 1887.
ولم يتخرج من كلية عمارة تقليدية.
He did not graduate from a conventional architecture school.
تعلم من السفر.
He learned from travel.
من الرسم.
From drawing.
من الحرفيين.
From craftsmen.
من الخرسانة.
From concrete.
ومن المباني القديمة التي جلس أمامها ورسمها بيده.
And from ancient buildings he sat before and drew by hand.
ثم أصبح لو كوربوزييه.
Then he became Le Corbusier.
اسماً لم يعد يخص شخصًا فقط.
A name that no longer belonged merely to one person.
بل أصبح يمثل مشروعًا فكريًا كاملًا.
It came to represent an entire intellectual project.
مشروعًا سأل:
A project that asked:
كيف يجب أن يسكن الإنسان الحديث؟
How should modern humanity live?
كيف يجب أن تدخل الشمس إلى البيت؟
How should sunlight enter the house?
كيف تتحرك السيارة في المدينة؟
How should the automobile move through the city?
كيف يمكن للخرسانة أن تصبح جمالًا؟
How can concrete become beauty?
وكيف يمكن للمعماري أن يعيد ترتيب العالم؟
And how can an architect reorder the world?
هذه الملحمة لا تريد أن تقدسه.
This epic does not seek to worship him.
ولا تريد أن تختصره بجملة.
Nor does it seek to reduce him to a slogan.
بل تريد أن تدخل عشرة مشاريع،
It seeks to enter ten projects,
عشرة أبواب،
Ten doors,
عشرة مختبرات،
Ten laboratories,
كي نرى كيف تغير الرجل،
To see how the man changed,
وكيف غير العمارة معه.
And how architecture changed with him.
