THE EPIC OF THE HOUSE OF ANANIAS
This epic recounts the story as narrated in the Acts of the Apostles, especially Chapters 9 and 22.
The identification of the present church with the house of Ananias rests upon an ancient Damascene Christian tradition.
The events belong to the first century AD and most likely occurred during its thirties, though no exact date is certain.
The structure seen today passed through historical and Byzantine phases, as well as successive restorations.
The value of the place lies not only in the age of its stones, but in the memory that remained alive within them.
✦ THE BEGINNING: THE HOUSE THAT DESCENDED BENEATH THE EARTH ✦
In Damascus, the ages do not merely stand beside one another.
They live one above another.
You walk along a modern street and find a Roman road beneath it.
You open a small door and enter a century abandoned by all its people.
You descend a few steps and feel that the earth is not leading you into a cellar.
It is returning you to the moment when a human being was transformed.
There, in the heart of Old Damascus, the House of Ananias lies concealed.
It is not a cathedral whose domes rise above the city.
Nor is it a palace whose owner sought to defy oblivion.
It is a small, low place, almost hidden beneath the ground.
Yet some places need no grandeur in order to become great.
It is enough that a frightened man entered it and encountered a blind man.
It is enough that two words were spoken there:
Brother Saul.
Those two words did not merely restore one man’s sight.
They opened a new road through history.
