حين أكتب عن رافاييل فينيولي، لا أجد نفسي أمام معماري يمكن اختزاله في شكل واحد.
When I write about Rafael Viñoly, I do not find an architect who can be reduced to one form.
لا يوجد منحنى واحد يطارده.
There is no single curve he keeps chasing.
ولا شبكة واحدة يكررها.
Nor one grid he repeats.
ولا مادة واحدة يعلن ولاءه لها.
Nor one material to which he declares loyalty.
وهذا هو أول ما يهمني فيه.
That is the first thing that interests me about him.
هو لا يريد أن يفرض أسلوبه على المشروع.
He does not want to impose his style on the project.
بل يريد أن يسمع ما يقوله المكان.
He wants to hear what the place is saying.
ما يقوله البرنامج.
What the program is saying.
ما تقوله التكنولوجيا.
What technology is saying.
ما تقوله الميزانية.
What the budget is saying.
وما يقوله الإنسان الذي سيدخل المبنى ويستخدمه.
And what the human being who will enter and use the building is saying.
لهذا تبدو عبارته:
That is why his statement,
«المباني أشكال من الأداء»
“Buildings are forms of performances”
أقرب إلى مفتاح كامل لفهمه.
Feels like a complete key to understanding him.
المبنى عند فينيولي لا يقف فقط.
A building for Viñoly does not merely stand.
إنه يؤدي.
It performs.
يستقبل.
It receives.
يوجه.
It directs.
يضيء.
It illuminates.
يحتوي الحشود.
It contains crowds.
ينقل الناس.
It moves people.
يواجه المناخ.
It faces climate.
ويتعامل مع المدينة كما يتعامل الممثل مع المسرح.
And it engages the city the way an actor engages a stage.
أنا كمعماري أجد هذه الفكرة مهمة جداً.
As an architect, I find this idea deeply important.
لأن كثيراً من العمارة اليوم تُقاس بالصورة قبل أن تُقاس بالأداء.
Because much architecture today is judged by the image before it is judged by performance.
لكن الصورة لا تكفي.
The image is not enough.
المبنى الحقيقي يجب أن يعمل.
The real building must work.
يجب أن يتحمل الزمن.
It must endure time.
وأن يقبل الناس.
It must accept people.
وأن يعرف كيف يرد على الشمس والريح والحركة والضغط والاستخدام.
It must know how to respond to sun, wind, movement, pressure, and use.
وهنا تبدأ ملحمة رافاييل فينيولي.
And here begins the epic of Rafael Viñoly.
