When I began reading Richard Neutra, I was not searching for another architect to add to the list of modern masters.
كنت أبحث عن السؤال الذي ظل يطارد العمارة الحديثة منذ ولادتها: لمن نبني؟
I was searching for the question that has haunted modern architecture since its birth: for whom do we build?
هل نبني للصورة؟
Do we build for the image?
هل نبني للنقاد؟
Do we build for critics?
هل نبني للمجلة المعمارية؟
Do we build for the architectural magazine?
أم نبني لذلك الإنسان الذي سيستيقظ كل صباح داخل ما رسمناه نحن على الورق؟
Or do we build for the human being who will awaken every morning inside what we once drew on paper?
هنا وجدت نيوترا.
Here I found Neutra.
وجدت معمارياً أخذ الفولاذ والزجاج والخرسانة، لكنه رفض أن يجعل الإنسان تابعاً لها.
I found an architect who took steel, glass, and concrete, yet refused to make the human being subordinate to them.
أخذ هندسة أوروبا الصارمة ووضعها تحت شمس كاليفورنيا.
He took the rigorous geometry of Europe and placed it beneath the California sun.
فدخلت الصحراء إلى الحداثة.
And the desert entered modernism.
ودخل النخيل.
The palms entered.
ودخل الماء.
Water entered.
ودخلت الجبال البعيدة.
The distant mountains entered.
وأصبحت النافذة عنده ليست مجرد فتحة في جدار، بل عيناً للبيت.
And the window became not merely an opening in a wall, but the eye of the house.
ولد Richard Joseph Neutra عام 1892 في فيينا، وتوفي عام 1970، لكن المسافة بين التاريخين ليست مجرد ثمانية وسبعين عاماً.
Richard Joseph Neutra was born in Vienna in 1892 and died in 1970, yet the distance between those dates is more than seventy-eight years.
