I did not enter The Merchant of Venice seeking entertainment.
دخلتها لأن سؤالًا كان ينتظرني هناك.
I entered because a question was waiting for me there.
سؤال العدالة حين تصبح نظامًا،
The question of justice when it becomes a system,
وسؤال الرحمة حين تُستعمل خطابًا.
And the question of mercy when it is used as rhetoric.
كنت أظنّ أن المسرح مكانٌ للقصص،
I once believed theatre was a place for stories,
فاكتشفت أنه مكانٌ للمحاسبة.
And discovered it is a place of reckoning.

ولا عن شايلوك وحده،
Nor about Shylock alone,
ولا عن بورشيا وحدها.
Nor about Portia alone.
إنها عنّي،
It is about me,
وعنك،
And about you,
وعن اللحظة التي
And about the moment when
نصفّق فيها
We applaud
ثم نُقنع أنفسنا
And convince ourselves
أننا لم نكن جزءًا من الحكم.
That we were never part of the verdict.
