حين أنظر إلى عمارة ألفارو سيزا، لا أشعر أنني أمام رجلٍ يريد أن يهزم المكان.
When I look at Álvaro Siza’s architecture, I do not feel I am facing a man trying to defeat the site.
أشعر أنني أمام رجلٍ يجلس إلى جانب المكان طويلًا حتى يفهمه.
I feel I am facing a man who sits beside the place long enough to understand it.
ينظر إلى انحدار الأرض.
He observes the slope of the land.
إلى اتجاه الشمس.
The direction of the sun.
إلى بيتٍ قديم يقف في الجوار.
An old house standing nearby.
إلى طريقٍ يسلكه الناس منذ عشرات السنين.
A path people have followed for decades.
إلى شجرةٍ ربما كانت موجودة قبل أن يولد المهندس والعميل معًا.
A tree that may have existed before both architect and client were born.
ثم يبدأ الرسم.
Only then does the drawing begin.
ولد ألفارو يواكيم دي ميلو سيزا فييرا عام 1933 في ماتوزينيوس قرب بورتو في البرتغال.
Álvaro Joaquim de Melo Siza Vieira was born in 1933 in Matosinhos near Porto, Portugal.
كان في شبابه يميل إلى النحت.
In his youth, he was drawn toward sculpture.
وهذا لم يختفِ حين أصبح معماريًا.
That instinct did not disappear when he became an architect.
بقيت الكتلة عنده شيئًا يُنحت.
Mass remained something to be sculpted.
وبقي الضوء إزميلًا.
Light remained a chisel.
وبقي الفراغ المادة التي لا تُرى، لكنها تحدد كل شيء.
And space remained the invisible material that determines everything.
قال عبارته الشهيرة:
He famously said:
«المعماريون لا يخترعون شيئًا، إنهم فقط يحوّلون الواقع.»
“Architects don’t invent anything, they just transform reality.”
وأنا أرى أن هذه الجملة تكاد تكون مفتاح عالمه كله.
I believe this sentence is almost the key to his entire world.
فهو لم يبحث عن العمارة القادمة من كوكب آخر.
He did not search for architecture arriving from another planet.
بحث عن العمارة المختبئة أصلًا في الأرض.
He searched for the architecture already hidden within the ground.
ثم أخرجها بهدوء.
Then he quietly brought it forth.
