المقدمة – Introduction 
سوريا ليست جغرافيا عابرة، بل كتابٌ كُتب بالحجر والياسمين والدم.
Syria is not a passing geography, but a book written in stone, jasmine, and blood.
من تدمر وزنوبيا، من قلاعٍ قاومت الغزاة، من مآذن تعانق الكنائس، وبيوتٍ تتنفس الشعر.
From Palmyra and Zenobia, from citadels resisting invaders, from minarets embracing churches, and homes breathing poetry.
لكن في قلب هذا الكتاب، صفحات ممزقة بمداد السجون والمجازر، بأسماء مفقودين وأطفال حُرموا من الغناء.
Yet in the heart of this book, pages are torn with the ink of prisons and massacres, with the names of the disappeared and children deprived of song.
سوريا وجهان: حضارة لا تموت، وجرح لا يندمل.
Syria has two faces: a civilization that does not die, and a wound that does not heal.
هي زنوبيا التي تحدّت روما، وهي أمٌّ تبكي عند خيمة لجوء.
She is Zenobia defying Rome, and a mother weeping at a refugee tent
هي الياسمين الدمشقي الذي يفيض بالرائحة،
 وهي الغوطة حين تحوّلت إلى رماد كيميائي.
She is Damascene jasmine overflowing with fragrance,
 and Ghouta when it turned into chemical ash.
هي نزار قباني حين جعل الشعر وطنًا، 
وهي الساروت حين جعل صوته حارسًا للثورة.
She is Nizar Qabbani making poetry a homeland, 
and Al-Sarout making his voice the guardian of a revolution.
وبين هذين الوجهين، سؤال أبدي: 
هل نعيد بناء الحجر أولًا، أم الإنسان؟
And between these two faces lies an eternal question:
 do we rebuild the stone first, or the human being
