لم نكتب هذا الكتاب لأنّنا نملك الجواب.
We did not write this book because we hold the answer.
كتبناه لأنّ الصمت كان يقتلنا ببطء.
We wrote it because silence was killing us slowly.
هذا الكتاب لم يولد في مكتب أو تحت ضوء مصباح.
This book was not born in an office or under the glow of a lamp.
ولد في الممرات الطويلة التي مشيناها وحدنا،
It was born in the long hallways we walked alone,
وفي ليالٍ لم يكن فيها معنا أحد سوى قلوبنا التي ترتجف.
And in nights where our only companion was the trembling of our own hearts.
كتبناه لأنّ الذاكرة كانت أثقل من أن تُحمَل وحدها،
We wrote it because memory was too heavy to carry alone,
وكان لا بدّ من مكان نضعها فيه.
And there had to be a place to set it down.
كتبناه لنحفظ ما تبقّى منا.
We wrote it to preserve what remains of us.
ولكي نمنع الرماد من أن ينساب من بين الأصابع.
And to keep the ash from slipping through our fingers.
لم نكتب لنروي الحرب…
We did not write to recount the war…
بل كتبنا لنروي ما فعلته بنا الحرب.
We wrote to recount what the war did to us.
كتبناه لأن الخراب لم يكن في المدن فقط،
We wrote it because destruction was not only in the cities,
بل في اللغة التي نتكلّم بها،
But also in the language we speak,
وفي الطريقة التي نصمت بها.
And in the way we fall silent.
كتبناه لمن فقد بيتًا ولم يجد وطنًا آخر يستقر فيه.
We wrote it for those who lost a home and never found another to settle in.
ولمن فقد صديقًا، ولم يجد نفسه بعده.
And for those who lost a friend and never found themselves again.
ولمن عاد حيًا… ولم يعرف ماذا يفعل بحياته.
And for those who survived… but did not know what to do with their survival.
كتبناه لأنّ بيننا جرحًا واحدًا أكبر من أن يقال وأصغر من أن يُنسى.
We wrote it because between us lies a wound too large to speak, too small to forget.
وكتبناه كي لا نترك هذا الجرح وحيدًا.
And we wrote it so that we would not leave this wound alone.

هذا الكتاب ليس محاولة للشفاء.
This book is not an attempt to heal.
إنه محاولة ألّا نموت بصمت.
It is an attempt not to die in silence.
