أنا لستُ سياسيًا،
I am not a politician,
ولا شاهدًا في محكمة،
Nor a witness in a court,
ولا مؤرّخًا يكتب ليحفظ أسماء القتلى والناجين.
Nor a historian writing to preserve the names of the dead and the survivors.
أنا رجلٌ حمل بلده على ظهره،
I am a man who carried his country on his back,
حتى صارت كتفاه تشبهان أبواب البيوت المهدّمة.
Until his shoulders came to resemble the doors of collapsed homes.
أنا لا أكتب حقائق،
I do not write facts,
ولا أقدّم احتجاجًا،
Nor do I present a protest,
ولا أصنع نبوءة.
Nor do I craft prophecy.
أنا أرسم.
I paint.
أرسم بقايا الذين حاولوا البقاء أحياء داخل مقبرة تتنفس.
I paint the remains of those who tried to stay alive inside a breathing grave.
أرسم المدن التي استيقظت بلا صوت مؤذن،
I paint the cities that woke without the voice of the muezzin,
والبيوت التي عادت إلى التراب الذي خرجت منه.
And the houses that returned to the earth from which they came.
أرسم الصوت حين ينكسر فلا يسمع أحد…
I paint the sound when it breaks and no one hears…
وأرسم الوجه حين يفقد ظلّه.
And I paint the face when it loses its shadow.

Ash Café
 
هذا المكان ليس مقهى.
This place is not a café.
بل أرصفة الذاكرة حين تتعب من المشي.
It is the sidewalks of memory when they grow tired of walking.
هنا لا تُقدَّم القهوة،
Coffee is not served here,
بل تُقدَّم القلوب التي نجت ولم تعرف أين تضع نفسها.
But the hearts that survived and no longer know where to rest are served.
الذين يدخلون هنا
Those who enter here
لا يبحثون عن عزاء،
Are not seeking comfort,
بل عن مكان يمكنهم أن يتركوا فيه ثقلهم على الكرسي دون أن يسقطوا.
But a place where they can set down their weight on a chair without breaking.
