✦ ملحمة أهل الكهف ✦ ✦ The Epic of the People of the Cave ✦

هذه الملحمة لا تُحاكي نصّ «أهل الكهف» كما كتبه توفيق الحكيم،
This epic does not mimic “The People of the Cave” as written by Tawfiq Al-Hakim,
بل تُحاكي الفراغ الذي تركه فينا عندما أغلق آخر صفحة.
But rather echoes the void it left within us when the last page was closed.
هي ليست إعادة كتابة…
It is not a rewrite…
بل محاولة للكتابة حيث لم يتجرّأ الحبر أن يذهب.
But an attempt to write where ink never dared to go.

قد يستيقظ أهل الكهف في هذه الملحمة بطريقةٍ لم يتخيلها الحكيم،
In this epic, the sleepers may awaken in a way Al-Hakim could not have imagined,
قد يتحدثون بلغة العمارة،
They may speak in the language of architecture,
قد يسألون الزمن كما يسأل المنفى الوطن،
They may question time the way exile questions homeland,
وقد تكون المدينة التي يخرجون إليها تشبه دمشق بعد الحرب
And the city they step into may resemble post-war Damascus
أكثر مما تشبه أثينا القديمة.
More than it resembles ancient Athens.

هذه الملحمة عملٌ خياليّ، رمزيّ، شعريّ،
This epic is a fictional, symbolic, and poetic work,
لا يلتزم بالأحداث كما وردت،
It does not adhere to the original narrative,
ولا يخضع لحدود الرواية أو المسرح.
Nor does it submit to the limits of novel or theatre.
هي رحلة بين اللغة والدهشة،
It is a journey between language and wonder,
بين الكهف والقلب،
Between the cave and the heart,
بين زمنين…
Between two times…
الأول نام، والثاني لم ينتظر.
One that slept, and one that did not wait.

جميع الشخصيات هنا تتحرّك في منطقة بين الواقع والأسطورة؛
All characters here move between reality and myth;
تتكلم العربية والإنكليزية
They speak both Arabic and English
كما يتكلم القلب بلغتين:
Just as the heart speaks two dialects:
لغة الخوف ولغة الرجاء.
The dialect of fear and the dialect of hope.

The author hereby declares that this epic:
ليست شرحًا للرواية،
Is not an explanation of the novel,
ولا ملخصًا لها،
Nor a summary of it,
ولا دراسة نقدية.
Nor a critical study.
إنما صلاة أدبية على أطلال الزمن،
It is rather a literary prayer upon the ruins of time,
ونداء للإنسان الذي خسر مدينته وهو نائم.
And a call to the human who lost his city while asleep.

قد يشعر القارئ أحيانًا أنه هو من خرج من الكهف…
At times, the reader may feel that it was he who emerged from the cave…
وقد يكتشف أن الكهف لم يكن في الجبل،
And may discover that the cave was never in the mountain,
بل في داخله.
But within him.

أي تشابه مع شخصيات أو أحداث هو محض مصادفة شعرية.
