I did not write this book
لأعرّف الملحمة،
to define the epic,
بل لأنني عشت داخلها.
but because I lived inside it.
 
الملحمة ليست نوعًا أدبيًا،
The epic is not a literary genre,
بل حالة وجودية
but an existential condition
يصل إليها الإنسان
that humans reach
حين لا تعود الأشكال الأخرى كافية.
when other forms are no longer sufficient.
 
كتبت هذه الصفحات
I wrote these pages
لأن الصمت صار مشاركة،
because silence became participation,
ولأن الاختصار
and because reduction
صار كذبًا أنيقًا.
became elegant lying.
 
لا يُقرأ هذا الكتاب بسرعة،
This book is not meant to be read quickly,
ولا من أجل الوصول إلى نتيجة،
nor to reach a conclusion,
ولا للبحث عن رأي نهائي.
nor to find a final opinion.
 
يُقرأ ببطء،
It is read slowly,
وبتوقّف،
with pauses,
وبالاستعداد
and with the readiness
لأن يتغيّر القارئ قليلًا.
for the reader to change slightly.
