When I read the architecture of Harry Seidler,
لا أرى رجلًا كان يبحث عن شكل غريب.
I do not see a man searching for a strange form.
أرى رجلًا كان يبحث عن المنطق.
I see a man searching for logic.
لكن المنطق عنده لم يكن باردًا.
Yet his logic was never cold.
كان يريد للعقل أن يصنع الجمال.
He wanted reason to create beauty.
وللهندسة أن تصنع الحرية.
And geometry to create freedom.
وللتكنولوجيا أن تخدم الإنسان.
And technology to serve humanity.
ولد في فيينا سنة 1923.
He was born in Vienna in 1923.
في أوروبا كانت تقترب من واحدة من أكثر مراحلها ظلمة.
In a Europe approaching one of its darkest periods.
ثم أجبرته أحداث التاريخ على الرحيل.
Then history forced him to leave.
وهكذا لم تبدأ قصته المعمارية بمكتب فاخر.
His architectural story therefore did not begin in a luxurious studio.
بدأت بالاقتلاع.
It began with displacement.
بالسفر.
With travel.
وبالبحث عن مكان جديد.
And with the search for a new place.
من أوروبا إلى بريطانيا،
From Europe to Britain,
ومن كندا إلى الولايات المتحدة،
From Canada to the United States,
ثم إلى أستراليا،
And eventually to Australia,
تحولت حياته إلى مدرسة جغرافية وفكرية.
his life became a geographical and intellectual school.
والأهم أنه التقى خلال رحلته بأسماء غيرت العمارة الحديثة.
Most importantly, his journey brought him into contact with figures who transformed modern architecture.
والتر غروبيوس.
Walter Gropius.
مارسيل بروير.
Marcel Breuer.
جوزف ألبرز.
Josef Albers.
وأوسكار نيماير.
And Oscar Niemeyer.
هذه ليست أسماء عابرة في سيرة معماري.
These are not incidental names in an architect’s biography.
إنها تقريبًا جامعة كاملة للحداثة.
They are almost an entire university of Modernism.
لكن سيدلر لم يبق تلميذًا.
Yet Seidler did not remain a student.
حمل ما تعلمه إلى قارة أخرى.
He carried what he learned to another continent.
