Epic Between Two Eras

كانوا يقولون:

They used to say:

"ما تغيّر شيء."

“Nothing has changed.”

وكأن الفجر لم يأتِ بعد ألف ليلة من الظلام.

As if dawn had never arrived after

a thousand nights of darkness.

وكأن الأبواب التي أغلقت بالخوف ما زالت مغلقة.

As if the doors sealed by fear were still locked.

وكأن الساحات ما زالت صامتة.

As if the squares were still silent.

وكأن الوطن ما زال أسيراً للماضي.

As if the homeland were still imprisoned by the past.

لا...

No...

لقد تغيّر الكثير.

Much has changed.

تغيّر وجه الطريق.

The face of the road has changed.

وتغيّر صوت الشارع.

The voice of the street has changed.

وتغيّر معنى الكلمة.

The meaning of words has changed.

وتغيّر ما كان الناس يظنون أنه لن يتغيّر أبداً.

And even what people believed

could never change has changed.

كان زمنٌ يخاف فيه الناس من الهمس.

There was a time when people feared even a whisper.

وكانت الجدران تسمع أكثر مما تتكلم.

The walls listened more than they

spoke.

وكان الخوف يسير في الأزقة قبل المارة.

Fear walked through the alleys before the people did.

وكان الصمت قانوناً غير مكتوب.

Silence was an unwritten law.

ثم دارت عجلة الأيام.

Then the wheel of days turned.

وسقطت أصنام كثيرة.

Many idols fell.

وتكسرت مرايا الوهم.

The mirrors of illusion shattered.

وخرجت الحكايات من القبور.

Stories emerged from their graves.

وخرج الناس من ظلال الخوف إلى ضوء السؤال.

And people stepped from the shadows of fear into the light of questioning.

لا أحد يقول إن الطريق سهل.

No one says the road is easy.

ولا أحد يدّعي أن الجراح التأمت.

No one claims the wounds have healed.

فالأوطان التي نزفت سنوات طويلة

For nations that have bled for many years

لا تُشفى في موسم واحد.

Do not heal in a single season.

ولا تُبنى في ليلة واحدة.

Nor are they rebuilt in a single night.

لكن الفرق بين الليل والفجر

Yet the difference between night and dawn

ليس أن الشمس بلغت السماء.

Is not that the sun has reached the

heavens.

بل أنها أشرقت أولاً.

It is that it has begun to rise.

وهذا وحده يغيّر العالم.

And that alone changes the world.

أما الذين يرددون:

As for those who repeat:

"ما تغيّر شيء"

“Nothing has changed,”

فكأنهم ينظرون إلى شجرة فتية

They are like those who look at a young tree

ويغضبون لأنها لم تصبح غابة بعد.

And complain because it has not yet become a forest.

أو ينظرون إلى الفجر

Or look at dawn

ويحاكمونه لأنه لم يصبح ظهيرة بعد.

And judge it because it is not yet noon.

إن بناء الأوطان

The building of nations

ليس معجزةً تهبط من السماء.

Is not a miracle descending from the sky.

بل هو عمل وصبر وتضحيات.

It is work, patience, and sacrifice.

وإيمان بأن الغد يمكن أن يكون أجمل من الأمس.

And faith that tomorrow can

be better than yesterday.

لقد تغيّر الكثير.

Much has changed.

تغيّر الخوف.

Fear has changed.

وتغيّر الصمت.

Silence has changed.

وتغيّرت الأحلام.

Dreams have changed.

وتغيّر معنى الوطن في قلوب أبنائه.

And the meaning of homeland has changed in the hearts of its people.

واليوم لا نبحث عن أصنام جديدة.

Today, we seek no new idols.

ولا عن هتافات جديدة.

Nor new slogans.

بل نبحث عن دولة.

We seek a state.

وعن قانون.

A rule of law.

وعن عدالة.

Justice.

وعن مستقبل يستحق أبناءه.

And a future worthy of its people.

وإذا كان الماضي قد كتب فصوله بالدموع،

If the past wrote its chapters in

tears,

فليكتب المستقبل صفحاته بالأمل.

Let the future write its pages with hope.

وإذا كانت سنوات الظلام طويلة،

And if the years of darkness were long,

فإن نوراً واحداً يكفي ليهزمها.

A single light is enough to defeat them.

وهكذا تمضي الأمم.

Thus nations move forward.

لا تعود إلى الوراء.

They do not return backward.

بل تواصل السير نحو الفجر.

They continue walking toward the dawn.
