يرى العالم خريطة،
seeing the world as a map,
لكن الخريطة
but the map
كانت ترى فيه
saw in him
رغبة لا تشبع.
an unending desire.
علّمنا
He taught us
أن الفتوحات
that conquests
قد توسّع الأرض،
may expand land,
لكنها لا توسّع الروح.
but they do not expand the soul.
وحين قال يوليوس قيصر:
When Julius Caesar said:
جئت، رأيت، انتصرت،
I came, I saw, I conquered,
كان التاريخ
history
يكتب ثمن هذه الجملة
was writing the price of that sentence
بالخناجر.
with daggers.
ثم جاء نابليون،
Then Napoleon came,
هنا لا نكتب التاريخ كتقويم،
Here we do not write history as a calendar,
ولا السياسة كخطابات،
nor politics as speeches,
بل نكتب
but we write
اللحظة التي
the moment when
وُضع فيها القرار
a decision was placed
في يد إنسان.
in a human hand.
في هذه الملاحم،
In these epics,
لا نقدّس الحاكم،
we do not sanctify the ruler,
ولا نكتفي بإدانته،
nor do we settle for condemning him,
بل نراقب
but we observe
كيف تغيّر الإنسان
how the human changed
حين اقترب من السلطة.
when he approached power.
وقف الإسكندر الأكبر،
Alexander the Great stood,
فالسياسة أحيانًا
For politics sometimes
تُحسم باللغة
is decided by language
قبل المدافع.
before cannons.
هنا نكتب التاريخ
Here we write history
من الداخل،
from the inside,
حيث الخوف،
where fear,
والطموح،
ambition,
والخطأ الإنساني.
and human error.
هذه الملاحم
These epics
ليست كتب تمجيد،
are not books of glorification,
ولا بيانات إدانة،
nor statements of condemnation,
بل مرايا
but mirrors
نرى فيها
in which we see
كيف يصنع الإنسان السلطة،
how humans create power,
وكيف تصنعه السلطة.
and how power creates humans.
نصف عبقري،
half genius,
نصف ظل،
half shadow,
فعلّمنا
and taught us
أن العبقرية
that genius
لا تحمي من السقوط.
does not protect from downfall.
وفي القرن العشرين،
And in the twentieth century,
وقف غاندي أعزلًا،
Gandhi stood unarmed,
ليثبت
to prove
أن الأخلاق
that ethics
قد تكون
can be
أقوى من الجيوش.
stronger than armies.
ثم وقف تشرشل،
Then Churchill stood,
يمسك بالكلمات
holding words
كما يُمسك بالسلاح.
as one holds a weapon.
