When I write about Peter Zumthor, I do not feel that I am writing about an architect who merely makes buildings.

بيتر زومثور لا يطارد الشكل الغريب.
Peter Zumthor does not chase strange form.
ولا يبحث عن المبنى الذي يصرخ كي يثبت وجوده.
He does not seek a building that shouts in order to prove its existence.

How does a person feel when entering?

How does scent change between wood, stone, and water?
وكيف يستطيع المبنى أن يحمل ذاكرة مكان لم نكن موجودين فيه؟
And how can a building carry the memory of a place in which we were never present?
هذا الكتاب لا يريد أن يحول زومثور إلى أسطورة بعيدة.
This book does not seek to turn Zumthor into a distant myth.
أريده أن يبقى معمارياً يمكن أن نتعلم منه.
I want him to remain an architect from whom we can learn.
نتعلم منه البطء.
We can learn slowness from him.
والإنصات.
And listening.
والتفصيل.
And detail.
والاحترام العميق للمادة.
And deep respect for material.
والشجاعة في أن يكون المبنى هادئاً في زمن أصبحت فيه العمارة تحاول أن تكون صورة قبل أن تكون مكاناً.
And the courage to let a building remain quiet in an age when architecture often tries to become an image before becoming a place.
