حين قرأت عبارة بييترو بيلوسكي: «لن نستطيع أبداً أن نصمم مبنى بجمال الأشجار»، شعرت أنني أمام معماري فهم حدود العمارة قبل أن يتحدث عن قوتها.
When I read Pietro Belluschi’s words, “We never could design a building as beautiful as trees,” I felt I was encountering an architect who understood architecture’s limits before speaking of its power.
هناك معماريون يريدون أن ينتصر المبنى على الطبيعة.
Some architects want the building to conquer nature.
وبيلوسكي كان يبحث عن شيء أكثر هدوءاً وعمقاً.
Belluschi searched for something quieter and deeper.
كان يريد للمبنى أن يجد مكانه داخل الطبيعة.
He wanted the building to find its place within nature.
ولد Pietro Belluschi في إيطاليا عام 1899.
Pietro Belluschi was born in Italy in 1899.
درس الهندسة المدنية في روما، ثم جاءت رحلته إلى الولايات المتحدة لتغير حياته كلها.
He studied civil engineering in Rome, and then his journey to the United States transformed his entire life.
استقر في شمال غرب المحيط الهادئ.
He settled in the Pacific Northwest.
وهناك وجد عالماً مختلفاً.
There he found a different world.
غابات كثيفة.
Dense forests.
مطر.
Rain.
جبال.
Mountains.
أنهار.
Rivers.
خشب.
Wood.
وضوء لا يشبه ضوء البحر المتوسط الذي عرفه في إيطاليا.
And a light unlike the Mediterranean light he had known in Italy.
وبدلاً من أن يفرض ذاكرته الأوروبية على المكان الجديد، بدأ يستمع إليه.
Instead of imposing his European memory upon this new place, he began listening to it.
وهذه، بالنسبة إليّ، أول علامات المعماري الحقيقي.
For me, this is one of the first signs of a true architect.
أن يصل إلى المكان وفي رأسه أفكار كثيرة، لكنه يسمح للمكان أن يغيّر تلك الأفكار.
To arrive at a place carrying many ideas, yet allow the place itself to change them.
