RICHARD MEIER — THE EPIC OF WHITE, LI
When I write about Richard Meier, I do not want merely to write the biography of an architect who created beautiful white buildings.
That would be an unfair reduction of an experience spanning many decades.
I want to enter the question that followed him throughout his architectural life.
What can light do to space?
And what can order do to chaos?
And how can a white wall become at once a background, a mirror, and a screen for shadow?
When I look at Meier’s work, I do not see white as a color.
I see it as an architectural instrument.
White receives the sun.
It reveals the movement of shadows.
It exposes joints, intersections, and edges.
And it makes the changing day visible upon architecture.
That is why a white Meier building never remains simply white.
In the morning, its surfaces lean toward the coolness of light.
At noon, they become sharper.
At sunset, the colors of the sky enter them.
On a rainy day, the white becomes gray and quiet.
The true color of the building, then, is light.
For me, this is the beginning of understanding Richard Meier.
Richard Alan Meier was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1934.
He studied architecture at Cornell University, graduating in 1957. Marcel Breuer.
Early in his career, he worked with several practices, including that of Marcel Breuer.
He established his own practice in New York in 1963.
In 1984, he received the Pritzker Architecture Prize.
Awards do not explain an architect.
Projects do.
That is why I want this epic to be a long journey through his most important projects.
From the small house to the museum.
From the church to the courthouse.
From city hall to the vast cultural complex.
From New England to Los Angeles.
From New York to Barcelona, Rome, and Frankfurt.
Ten chapters.
But within them, an entire architectural life.
