THE UNDERGROUND CHAMBERS OF DAMASCUS

$6.00Price

To every human being who entered a door without knowing when it would open again.

To those who learned what it means for light to become a wish.

To those who preserved their names when fear tried to turn them into numbers.

To the mothers who waited at doors.

To the fathers who slept with their eyes open for the missing.

To the children who grew up beside a chair no one ever occupied.

To those who emerged from darkness.

And to those who never emerged, whose names must never leave our memory.

And to Damascus, not as a prison, but as a city that must always be greater than every prison.

Author’s Note

This epic is a literary work of imagination and reflection.

It does not claim that the underground chamber described here is one specific historical site, nor that its characters and events are a literal record of one particular incident.

The underground chambers here are constructed as a composite symbolic space.

A place where memories of imprisonment mingle with fear, architecture, waiting, prayer, and the questions repression leaves inside the human being.

Damascus is not the accused in this epic.

Damascus is the witness.

The city above continues through bread, coffee, markets, calls to prayer, bells, and ordinary life.

What lies beneath is the face that must not be hidden when memory is written.

This epic does not glorify suffering.

Nor does it turn imprisonment into heroism.

It is a literary attempt to understand how a human being preserves name, mind, and dignity when deprived of the simplest things.

And above all, how a person leaves the cellar without allowing the cellar to occupy the entire world.
