This is not merely the biography of an architect who built beautiful buildings.

It is the story of an idea that began with a question both simple and difficult.

How can we build a dense city without crushing the human being inside it?

How can we make an apartment feel like a true home?

How can we give a person a garden while living ten floors above the ground?

How can we combine density and privacy?

How can we unite technology and nature?

How can we create a global landmark without losing the spirit of place?

These questions accompanied Moshe Safdie for more than six decades.

They evolved from a young student’s drawings into projects spread across continents.

The source from which this epic begins describes him as an architect, urban designer, educator, theorist, and author, highlighting Habitat 67, Virasat-e-Khalsa, Marina Bay Sands, and the National Gallery of Canada among his notable works.

But when I look at Safdie, I do not want merely to count buildings.

I want to search for the thread connecting them.

That thread is the human being.

The human being before the city.

The human being before technology.

The human being before the market.

And the human being before the immense power of the building.

That is why Safdie’s statement about architecture possessing a profound ethic becomes an important key to understanding his intellectual project.

For him, architecture is not a game of forms.

It is a responsibility.

And if a building is beautiful but isolates people,

Beauty alone is not enough.

And if a building is enormous but gives people nowhere to meet,

Size alone does not make a city.

And if technology is astonishing but severs our relationship with nature,

Technology becomes an advanced cage.

This is the point of departure.
