REM KOOLHAAS ريم كولهاس 1944 — THE EPIC OF THE CITY, POSSIBILITY, AND ARCHITECTU

$10.00Price

When I write about Rem Koolhaas, I feel that I am not writing about an architect alone.

I am writing about a man who tried to understand the city before trying to control it.

A man who did not begin with form.

He began with the question.

What does the city do to the human being?

What does density do to relationships?

How do commerce, media, politics, and speed become architecture?

And how can a building remain alive after the architect has left it?

That last question summarizes something profound in Koolhaas’s thinking.

He says that a building has at least two lives.

The life imagined by the architect.

And the life the building lives after completion.

And these two lives are never identical.

I like this idea very much.

Because it returns the architect to his true scale.

We draw.

We plan.

We convince ourselves that we know what will happen.

Then people arrive.

Life enters.

And something happens that was never present in the drawing.

That is architecture.

And here begins the epic of Rem Koolhaas.
