When Silence Speaks Book

It is an attempt to capture an intellectual moment between two friends once united by architecture.
المعماري فايز خلف، سوريٌّ يعيش اليوم في كاليفورنيا، كتب نصاً بعنوان “حين يغلي الصمت” في ساعةٍ متأخرة من الليل في سانتا مونيكا.
The architect Faiz Khlaf, a Syrian living today in California, wrote a text titled “When Silence Boils” late at night in Santa Monica.
النص لم يكن مجرد كلمات، بل محاولة للاقتراب من سؤالٍ داخلي عن المعنى والصمت والهوية.
The text was not merely words, but an attempt to approach an inner question about meaning, silence, and identity.
أما المعماري عماد درويش، القادم من دمشق، فقد قرأ النص بوصفه حواراً مفتوحاً لا تفسيراً نهائياً.
The architect Imad Darouich, coming from Damascus, read the text as an open dialogue rather than a final interpretation.
فالاثنان كانا في سنواتٍ سابقة يدرّسان مادة التصميم المعماري في جامعةٍ خاصة في دمشق.
Years earlier, the two had taught architectural design at a private university in Damascus.
هناك، بين الرسومات والفراغات المعمارية، بدأت صداقتهما وحواراتهما حول الفكرة والمعنى.
There, among drawings and architectural spaces, their friendship and conversations about ideas and meaning began.
ومع مرور الزمن تغيّرت المدن والخرائط، لكن بعض الحوارات لا تنتهي بانتهاء المكان.
Over time cities and maps changed, yet some dialogues do not end when places change.
بل تبقى معلّقة في الذاكرة تنتظر لحظةً أخرى لتعود.
They remain suspended in memory waiting for another moment to return.
هذا النص إذن ليس تفسيراً لنص فايز، بل حوارٌ معه.
This text therefore is not an interpretation of Faiz’s writing, but a dialogue with it.
حوارٌ يحاول أن يفهم الكلمات دون أن يدّعي امتلاك معناها الأخير.
A dialogue that attempts to understand the words without claiming their final meaning.
وفي هذا الحوار يظهر ضيفٌ ثالث لم يُدعَ بالكلام لكنه حضر منذ البداية.
In this dialogue a third guest appears, not invited by speech yet present from the beginning.
ذلك الضيف هو الصمت.
That guest is Silence.
الصمت هنا ليس فراغاً بين الجمل، بل حضورٌ يجعل الكلمات تفكر قبل أن تُقال.
Here silence is not a gap between sentences, but a presence that makes words think before they are spoken.
ولهذا فإن هذا النص يجب أن يُقرأ ببطء.
For this reason the text should be read slowly.
ليس بحثاً عن جوابٍ سريع، بل محاولة للإصغاء إلى السؤال.
Not in search of a quick answer, but in an attempt to listen to the question.
فبعض الكلمات لا تُفهم بالقراءة وحدها.
Some words cannot be understood by reading alone.
بل تحتاج أيضاً إلى لحظة صمت.
They also require a moment of silence.
