Some architects begin with the site.

Others begin with function.

Some begin with form.

But Daniel Libeskind, I feel, begins with the wound.

He looks at the ground and asks what happened upon it.

He looks at the wall and asks who once stood behind it.

He looks at the city and sees more than a collection of buildings.

He sees an immense memory inhabited by life, death, love, war, music, and migration.

That is why I cannot read Libeskind merely as an architect of unusual forms.

His sharp angles are not geometric games.

His tilted walls are not spectacle.

His fractured spaces are not formal whims.

Behind every fracture is a question.

Behind every angle is a memory.

Behind every void is an absent human being.

Daniel Libeskind was born in Poland in 1946 to a Jewish family that survived the Holocaust.

His life moved between Poland, Israel, and the United States.

Music was a fundamental part of his youth before architecture became his greater language.

He studied at Cooper Union in New York and later pursued advanced studies in architectural history and theory.

From that point, his true project began.

It was not merely a project of constructing buildings.

It was a project of constructing meaning.

This epic is not an attempt to list his works.

It is an attempt to enter the question inhabiting them all:

How can architecture remember?
