RAFAEL MONEO — THE EPIC OF REASON,

$10.00Price

When I write about Rafael Moneo, I feel I am facing an architect who does not love noise.

He does not chase strange form simply to attract attention.

He does not make the building a shout detached from the city.

He works quietly.

With reason.

With proportion.

With mass.

With material.

And with deep respect for what existed before his arrival.

This is what draws me to him.

As an architect, I know that the most difficult decisions are not always the most unusual ones.

Sometimes the hardest decision is knowing how to introduce a new building into an old city without wounding it.

How can you be contemporary without becoming arrogant toward history?

How can you use stone today without becoming an imitator of the past?

How can you make a museum function well while also carrying the memory of its place?

These are the questions I find in Rafael Moneo’s work.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I am Imad Darouich, an architect and writer living in New York.

When I look at Rafael Moneo, I do not see merely an important Spanish architect.

I also see a teacher.

A historian.

A thinker.

A man who remained close to theory throughout his life, yet never allowed theory to swallow the building.

That is why I like his statement:

“Buildings are always better than drawings and models.”

This sentence matters to me deeply.

A drawing can be perfect.

A rendering can be seductive.

A model can appear logical.

But the real building enters the rain.

The sun strikes it.

People use it.

The door is opened thousands of times.

Material ages.

The place develops a smell.

And here truth begins.
