دمشق ليست مدينة تُقرأ،
Damascus is not a city to be read,
بل كتابٌ يقرأنا.
But a book that reads us.
كل حجرٍ فيها جملة،
Every stone in it is a sentence,
كل نافذة فصل،
Every window a chapter,
وكل دمعةٍ سقطت على أرضها…
And every tear that fell upon its soil…
حبرٌ سرّي كتب تاريخ البشر.
Is secret ink that wrote the history of humankind.
هذا الكتاب ليس وصفاً،
This book is not a description,
بل رحلة في أحشاء مدينةٍ تعانق السماء وتبتلع الأرض.
But a journey into the entrails of a city that embraces the sky and swallows the earth.
رحلة عبر أنفاقها، أسواقها، أبوابها، أنهارها،
A journey through its tunnels, markets, gates, rivers,
وعبر هلوستها التي تتحول إلى ملاحم.

بل يستعد ليُصاب بعدوى دمشق:
But prepares to be infected by Damascus:
عدوى الحلم، وعدوى الحب، وعدوى الأبد.
