نحنُ السوريين…
We Syrians…
أمةٌ تولد من النار.
A nation born from fire.
ونمشي فوق رمادنا.
And we walk on our own ashes.
نصفُنا ملاك.
Half of us is an angel.
ونصفُنا ذئب.
And half of us is a wolf.
نصلّي بدموع.
We pray with tears.
ونصرخ بوجوه بعضنا.
And we shout in each other’s faces.
نقرأ الفلسفة.
We read philosophy.
ونكسر الدور في الطابور.
And break the line at the bakery.
نُعلِّم الأخلاق.
We teach virtue.
وندهسها عندما نغضب.
And crush it when we rage.
داخل كلٍّ منا مدينة كاملة.
Inside each of us lives a whole city.
مدينة نور.
A city of light.
ومدينة ظلام.
And a city of darkness.
 
في واشنطن…
In Washington…
لم يظهر رئيس فقط.
Not just a president appeared.
ظهرت مرآتنا.
Our mirror appeared.
وتعرّت أرواحنا.
Our souls were exposed.
الأسئلة لم تكن أسئلة.
The questions weren’t questions.
كانت صرخات خوف.
