MICHEL ABBOUD_ WHEN ARCHITECTURE
Beirut is not merely an entry in Michel Abboud’s biography.
In an architectural reading of his work, it remains a persistent possibility behind many of the questions that later emerge in his projects.
A city caught between sea and mountain teaches its inhabitants that a site is not an empty surface waiting to be built upon.
The site is a force.
It has sun, orientation, wind, slope, memory, and danger.
Once an architect reaches this understanding, a building is no longer an object placed upon the earth, but a response to forces intersecting within it.
Beirut itself is an immense example of this condition.
Its façades are not identical.
Its streets do not obey a single logic.
Its neighborhoods transform rapidly, while fragments of older layers remain caught between new towers.
At times it appears as though several eras decided to inhabit the same place without ever agreeing with one another.
From this kind of city can emerge an architect who distrusts easy solutions.
An easy solution often cannot confront a complex reality.
When Michel Abboud moved to New York, he encountered a city different in form yet sharing something essential with Beirut: tension.
New York is a rigid grid filled with exceptions.
It is a city governed by laws, zoning, heights, and setbacks, yet at the same time built upon ambition, competition, and the desire to break limits.
Almost every parcel of land contains a complicated equation.
How much can we build?
How high can we rise?
Where does the light come from?
What does the resident see?
And what does the city see of him?
These are not merely technical questions.
They are questions that construct the personality of a building.
For this reason, moving from Beirut to New York was not necessarily a movement from chaos to order.
Perhaps it was a movement from one form of complexity to another
