لم أشاهدُ مسلسلًا...

I did not watch a television series...

بل شاهدتُ الإنسان.

I watched humanity.

كلُّ بحرٍ يبدأ بالماء،

Every sea begins with water,

وينتهي داخل القلب.

And ends inside the human heart.

كانوا يسمونها سفينة.

They called it a ship.

أما أنا،But I,

فرأيتها فكرةً مسلحة.

Saw an armed idea.

رؤوسُ التنانين على المقدمة،

Dragon heads crowned its bow,

لكن الوحش الحقيقي

Yet the true monster

كان يختبئ في الداخل.

Was hidden within.

كلُّ إمبراطوريةٍ،

Every empire,

ولدت من خوفٍ قديم.Was born from an ancient fear.

ثم ادعت أنها وُلدت من المجد.Then claimed it was born from glory.

السيف لا يصنع الحضارة.A sword never builds civilization.

إنه يؤجل سقوطها فقط.It merely postpones its collapse.

رأيتُ ملوكًاI saw kings

يصنعون الآلهة بأيديهم،Carving gods with their own hands,

ثم يسجدون لها.Then kneeling before them.

عجيبٌ أمرُ الإنسان.How strange humanity is.

يعبد ما صنعه،It worships what it creates,

ثم يخاف مما عبده.Then fears what it worships.

كلُّ حجرٍ في التاريخ،Every stone in history,

يحمل اسم قاتلٍ،Carries the name of a killer,

واسم ضحيةٍ،And the name of a victim,

في الوقت نفسه.At the same time.

وحين قرأتُ ابن فضلان،When I read Ibn Fadlan,

لم أقرأ رجالًا فقط.I did not read merely about men.

بل قرأتُ زمنًاI read an age

كانت القوة فيهWhere strength

لغةً يتحدثها الجميع.Was the language everyone spoke.

النار لا تعرف دينًا.Fire knows no religion.

ولا البحر يعرف قومية.Nor does the sea know nationality.

أما الدم...But blood...

فله اللون نفسه دائمًا.Always bears the same color.

أخطرُ ما في التاريخ،The most dangerous thing about history,

ليس الحروب.Is not the wars.

بل تحويلهاBut turning them

إلى أناشيد.Into songs.

وأخطرُ من السيوف،More dangerous than swords,

ذاكرةٌIs a memory

تنسى الضحايا،That forgets the victims,

وتحفظ أسماء المنتصرين.Yet remembers the victors.

خرجتُ من الحكاية،I left the story,

وأنا أكثرُ احترامًاWith greater respect

للحقائق،For facts,

وأقلُّ إعجابًاAnd less admiration

بالأساطير.For legends.

فالتاريخ لا يحتاجHistory does not need

إلى أبطالٍ جدد.New heroes.

بل إلى عيونٍIt needs eyes

تجرؤ على النظرThat dare to look

إلى الحقيقة...At the truth...

قبل أن تتحولBefore it becomes

هي أيضًا...Another legend.
