The Beginning: The Department of Borrowed Names
دخلتُ مدينةً أعرف حجارتها، لكنني لم أعد أعرف أسماءها.I entered a city whose stones I knew, but whose names I no longer recognized.
كانت الجبال في مكانها، والنهر في مكانه، والذاكرة وحدها بدت غريبةً عن المكان.The mountains remained, the river remained, but memory itself seemed foreign to the place.
بحثت عن الحارات التي كانت تعرف أسماء أجدادنا.I searched for the neighborhoods that once knew our ancestors’ names.
فوجدت أمامي: ماروتا سيتي، وباسيليا سيتي، وأب تاون، ونيو تاون.I found Marota City, Basilia City, Up Town, and New Town before me.
ورأيت نيو قاسيون مول، وسكي لاند، وغولدن مول، وتاون سنتر.I saw New Qasioun Mall, Sky Land, Golden Mall, and Town Center.
ووجدت شام سيتي سنتر، وأفينيو مول، وسوريا تاورز، وسوق بلازا.I found Cham City Center, Avenue Mall, Syria Towers, and Souq Plaza.
كانت المدينة تتحدث العربية في بيوتها.The city spoke Arabic inside its homes.
لكنها عندما أرادت أن تبيع شقةً أو تفتتح مولًا، استحيت من لغتها.But when it wanted to sell an apartment or open a mall, it became ashamed of its language.
ذهبت إلى دائرة الأسماء لأسأل عن السبب.I went to the Department of Names to ask why.
كان على الباب إعلان يقول:A notice on the door declared:
لا يُقبل أي اسم محلي ما لم يحصل على شهادة حداثة من لغة أجنبية.No local name shall be accepted without a certificate of modernity from a foreign language.
الفصل الأول: شهادة المدينة
Chapter One: The City’s Testimony
وقفت المدينة أمام القاضي وقد غطّت وجهها بلافتات زجاجية.The city stood before the judge, its face covered with glass signs.
سألها القاضي: ما اسمك؟The judge asked: What is your name?
قالت: كنت أملك اسمًا، لكن المستثمر لم يجده مناسبًا للإعلان.It replied: I once had a name, but the investor found it unsuitable for advertising.
سألها: ولماذا؟He asked: Why?
قالت: لأن اسمي كان مفهومًا لأهلي.It said: Because my people could understand my name.
فتح القاضي كتاب القوانين وقال:The judge opened the book of regulations and said:
الاسم الذي يفهمه الناس لا يصلح لتسويق الرفاهية.A name understood by the people is unsuitable for marketing luxury.
قالت المدينة: لكنني لست إعلانًا.The city replied: But I am not an advertisement.
أنا ذاكرة تسكنها أجيال.I am a memory inhabited by generations.
قال القاضي: الذاكرة لا تدخل في حساب المساحات القابلة للبيع.The judge said: Memory is not included in the calculation of sellable space.
ثم حكم عليها بأن تحمل اسمًا لا يفهمه سكانها.He then sentenced it to carry a name its residents could not understand.
الفصل الثاني: شهادة ماروتا وباسيليا
Chapter Two: The Testimony of Marota and Basilia
دخل اسمان إلى المحكمة وهما يحملان وثائق قديمة.Two names entered the courtroom carrying ancient documents.
قال الأول: أنا ماروتا، ولست كلمةً وُلدت في مكتب دعاية غربي.The first said: I am Marota, not a word born in a Western advertising office.
وقالت الثانية: أنا باسيليا، ويحمل اسمي في السريانية معنى الجنة.The second said: I am Basilia, and my name carries the Syriac meaning of paradise.
السريانية ليست غريبةً عن هذه الأرض.Syriac is not foreign to this land.
إنها طبقة عميقة من ذاكرتها الحضارية واللغوية.It is a deep layer of its civilizational and linguistic memory.
لكن الموظف أخذ الاسمين وأضاف إليهما كلمة «سيتي».But the clerk took both names and added the word “City.”
قال: الاسم القديم وحده لا يكفي.He said: The ancient name alone is not enough.
يجب أن يرتدي ربطة عنق إنكليزية حتى يدخل سوق العقارات.It must wear an English necktie before entering the real-estate market.
سألته ماروتا: هل أصبحت أكثر سورية بعد إضافة «سيتي»؟Marota asked him: Did I become more Syrian after adding “City”?
وسألته باسيليا: وهل اقتربت الجنة عندما تغيرت لغة اللافتة؟Basilia asked him: Did paradise come closer when the sign changed languages?
لم يجب الموظف.The clerk did not answer.
كان مشغولًا بختم كلمة «حديث» فوق كل ما لا يفهمه الناس.He was busy stamping the word “modern” onto everything the people could not understand.
وتؤكد مصادر منشورة أن الاسمين قُدّما بوصفهما سريانيين، بينما جاءت كلمة «سيتي» غطاءً تسويقيًا حديثًا.Published sources describe both names as Syriac, while “City” arrived as a modern marketing layer.
الفصل الثالث: معرض الأسماء اللامعة
Chapter Three: The Exhibition of Shining Names
دخلت معرضًا لبيع الأسماء بالمتر المربع.I entered an exhibition where names were sold by the square meter.
قال البائع: لدينا «مول» لمن لا يريد كلمة سوق.The seller said: We offer “Mall” for those who do not want the word souq.
ولدينا «تاون» لمن يخجل من كلمة بلدة.We offer “Town” for those ashamed of the word town in their own language.
ولدينا «سيتي» لمن يظن أن كلمة مدينة قديمة.We offer “City” for those who believe their own word for city is outdated.
ولدينا «أفينيو» لمن لا يثق بكلمة جادة أو شارع.We offer “Avenue” for those who distrust their own words for boulevard or street.
ولدينا «بلازا» لمن لم تعد كلمة ساحة تقنعه.We offer “Plaza” for those no longer convinced by their own word for square.
ولدينا «غولدن» لمن يريد أن يطلي الفقر بحروف ذهبية.We offer “Golden” for those who wish to coat poverty in golden letters.
ولدينا «سكاي» لمن بنى ثلاثة طوابق ويريد إقناع الناس بأنه وصل إلى السماء.We offer “Sky” for those who built three floors and wish to convince people they reached heaven.
سألته: وهل تبيعون أسماءً من تاريخ البلاد؟I asked: Do you sell names from the country’s history?
قال: هذه الأسماء جميلة، لكنها لا ترفع سعر الشقة.He replied: Those names are beautiful, but they do not raise apartment prices.
الفصل الرابع: شهادة الوثائق
Chapter Four: The Testimony of Documents
لم تكن الأسماء خيالًا اخترعته الملحمة.These names were not fantasies invented by the epic.
ظهرت «نيو قاسيون مول» و«أفينيو مول» و«تاون سنتر» في وثائق رسمية حديثة.New Qasioun Mall, Avenue Mall, and Town Center appeared in recent official documents.
وتظهر «شام سيتي سنتر» و«سوق بلازا» في أدلة الخدمات التجارية.Cham City Center and Souq Plaza appear in commercial service directories.
ويُستخدم اسم «أب تاون» علنًا لمجمع ترفيهي وخدمي في دمشق.The name Up Town is publicly used for a recreational and service complex in Damascus.
كما عاد اسم «سكي لاند مول» إلى الظهور في التغطيات الإعلامية.The name Sky Land Mall has also returned in media coverage.
لم تعد المسألة اسمًا واحدًا يمكن اعتباره استثناءً.The issue is no longer a single name that can be dismissed as an exception.
إنها لغة تسويقية كاملة تزحف فوق واجهات المدينة.It is an entire marketing language crawling across the city’s façades.
الفصل الخامس: شهادة اللغة العربية
Chapter Five: The Testimony of Arabic
دخلت اللغة العربية المحكمة وحدها.Arabic entered the courtroom alone.
لم تحمل سيفًا، ولم تطلب طرد لغة أخرى.It carried no sword and demanded the expulsion of no other language.
قالت: أنا لا أخاف من الإنكليزية.It said: I am not afraid of English.
ولا أخاف من السريانية أو الصينية أو اليابانية أو الإسبانية.Nor do I fear Syriac, Chinese, Japanese, or Spanish.
لقد عشت قرونًا وأنا أستقبل الكلمات وأمنحها مكانًا في بيتي.For centuries, I have welcomed words and given them a place in my home.
لكنني أخاف من أبنائي عندما لا يرون المستقبل إلا مكتوبًا بغير حروفي.But I fear my children when they see the future only when written in letters other than mine.
أنا لا أطلب منهم أن يغلقوا النوافذ.I do not ask them to close the windows.
أطلب منهم فقط ألا يقتلعوا باب البيت.I ask only that they do not tear out the door of the house.
تعلموا لغات الأرض كلها.Learn every language on Earth.
خاطبوا العالم بلغاته.Address the world in its languages.
لكن لا تجعلوا لغتي تقف أمام مشروع سوري كأنها سائحة تحتاج إلى تأشيرة دخول.But do not make me stand before a Syrian project like a tourist requiring an entry visa.
الفصل السادس: شهادة اللغة السريانية
Chapter Six: The Testimony of Syriac
نهضت السريانية وقالت: لا تستخدموا اسمي للهروب من هويتكم.Syriac rose and said: Do not use my name to escape your identity.
أنا لست لغة أجنبية هبطت بالمظلة فوق هذه البلاد.I am not a foreign language parachuted onto this land.
أنا من أصواتها القديمة.I am one of its ancient voices.
عشت في قراها وكنائسها وصلواتها وأسماء مدنها.I lived in its villages, churches, prayers, and city names.
أنا أخت الذاكرة، ولست زينةً فوق برج فاخر.I am a sister of memory, not an ornament atop a luxury tower.
من حقي أن أعيش إلى جانب العربية والكردية والأرمنية وسائر لغات السوريين.I have the right to live beside Arabic, Kurdish, Armenian, and the other languages of Syrians.
لكن لا تأخذوا كلمةً مني، ثم تلصقوا بها كلمة «سيتي»، وتعلنوا أنكم اكتشفتم الحداثة.But do not take a word from me, attach “City” to it, and announce that you have discovered modernity.
احترامي لا يكون باستعمال اسمي في إعلان.Respecting me does not mean using my name in an advertisement.
احترامي يكون بحماية حضوري الحقيقي في ثقافة البلاد.Respecting me means protecting my genuine presence in the country’s culture.
الفصل السابع: شهادة الطفل
Chapter Seven: The Child’s Testimony
استدعوا طفلًا وسألوه عن عنوان بيته.They summoned a child and asked for his home address.
قال: أسكن في برج يحمل اسمًا لا أعرف معناه.He said: I live in a tower whose name I do not understand.
سأله القاضي: هل تستطيع كتابته؟The judge asked: Can you write it?
قال: أستطيع تصوير اللافتة بهاتفي.He replied: I can photograph the sign with my phone.
سأله: وهل تعرف لماذا اختير؟He asked: Do you know why it was chosen?
قال الطفل: قالوا إن الاسم الأجنبي يجعل البناء أرقى.The child said: They told us a foreign name makes the building more prestigious.
سأله القاضي: وماذا كان اسم الأرض قبل البرج؟The judge asked: What was the land called before the tower?
نظر الطفل إلى أبيه.The child looked at his father.
ونظر الأب إلى الموظف.The father looked at the clerk.
ونظر الموظف إلى ملف لم يعد موجودًا.The clerk looked at a file that no longer existed.
عندها أدركت أن الاسم الجديد لم يعرّف الطفل بالمكان.Then I realized that the new name had not introduced the child to the place.
لقد ساعده فقط على نسيان ما كان المكان عليه.It had only helped him forget what the place had once been.
الفصل الثامن: شهادة الصين
Chapter Eight: The Testimony of China
قلت للموظف: أنتم تختارون الأسماء الإنكليزية لأنكم تربطونها بالقوة والحداثة.I told the clerk: You choose English names because you associate them with power and modernity.
فماذا ستفعلون إذا أصبحت الصين مركز القوة الأكبر؟What will you do if China becomes the greater center of power?
قال: سنزيل الأسماء الإنكليزية ونضع أسماء صينية.He replied: We will remove the English names and replace them with Chinese ones.
قلت: وإذا صعدت اليابان؟I asked: And if Japan rises?
قال: سنتحول إلى اليابانية.He said: We will switch to Japanese.
قلت: وإذا أصبحت الإسبانية لغة السوق الجديدة؟I asked: And if Spanish becomes the new language of the market?
قال: سنغير اللافتات مرة أخرى.He replied: We will change the signs again.
سألته: ومتى تستخدمون لغتكم؟I asked him: And when will you use your own language?
قال: عندما تصبح قوةً أجنبية.He said: When it becomes a foreign power.
لكن شهادة الصين نفسها كشفت مفارقةً أخرى.Yet China’s own testimony revealed another paradox.
فقد ظهرت فيها مجمعات حملت أسماءً من نوع «مانهاتن» و«البندقية» و«باريس الشرقية».Residential developments appeared there with names such as Manhattan, Venice, and Oriental Paris.
ثم بدأت الدولة حملات لمواجهة الأسماء التي وصفتها بالأجنبية والغريبة والمبالغ فيها.The state later launched campaigns against names it described as foreign, bizarre, and exaggerated.
وفي عام 2022 أصدرت نظامًا منقحًا لتشديد إدارة أسماء الأماكن وصون دلالاتها الثقافية.In 2022, it issued revised regulations to tighten the management of place names and protect their cultural meaning.
إذن، لم تكن الصين بلا أخطاء.China was not without mistakes.
لكنها أدركت أن الاسم جزء من السيادة الثقافية، وليس مجرد لعبة للمطور العقاري.But it recognized that a name is part of cultural sovereignty, not merely a developer’s game.
الفصل التاسع: شهادة المعماري
Chapter Nine: The Architect’s Testimony
استدعوني بصفتي معماريًا، وسألوني: هل تعارض العمارة الحديثة؟They summoned me as an architect and asked: Do you oppose modern architecture?
قلت: أنا معماري؛ وكيف أعادي المستقبل؟I replied: I am an architect; how could I oppose the future?
أنا أؤمن بالزجاج والفولاذ والتكنولوجيا كما أؤمن بالحجر والخشب والظل.I believe in glass, steel, and technology as I believe in stone, wood, and shadow.
لكن الحداثة ليست واجهةً زجاجية تحمل اسمًا إنكليزيًا.But modernity is not a glass façade carrying an English name.
الحداثة أن يحترم المبنى الإنسان والمكان والمناخ والذاكرة.Modernity means that a building respects people, place, climate, and memory.
يمكننا أن نبني أعلى الأبراج ونمنحها أسماءً من أرضنا.We can build the tallest towers and give them names from our land.
يمكننا أن نصمم أحدث المدن من دون أن نمحو أسماء الحقول التي قامت فوقها.We can design the most advanced cities without erasing the names of the fields beneath them.
قاسيون لا يصبح أقل ارتفاعًا إذا كتبنا اسمه بالعربية.Qasioun does not become shorter when its name is written in Arabic.
وبردى لا يصبح أقل حضارة لأنه لم يحمل كلمة «ريفر».Barada does not become less civilized because it does not carry the word “River.”
والياسمين لا يحتاج إلى اسم فرنسي كي تفوح رائحته.Jasmine does not need a French name for its fragrance to spread.
والغوطة لا تحتاج إلى «غرين سيتي» كي نتذكر أنها كانت خضراء.Ghouta does not need “Green City” to remind us that it was once green.
المشكلة ليست في المبنى الحديث.The problem is not the modern building.
المشكلة في عقل يظن أن الحداثة تبدأ عندما تنتهي هويته.The problem lies in a mind that believes modernity begins where its identity ends.
الفصل العاشر: محاكمة الاسم المحلي
Chapter Ten: The Trial of the Local Name
وقف الاسم المحلي في قفص الاتهام.The local name stood inside the defendant’s cage.
كانت ثيابه قديمة، لكن عينيه حملتا ذاكرة آلاف السنين.Its clothes were old, but its eyes carried the memory of thousands of years.
قال المدعي: أنت متهم بأنك لا تبدو عالميًا.The prosecutor said: You are accused of not appearing global.
قال الاسم: وهل العالمية أن أتنكر لأمي؟The name replied: Does being global require me to deny my mother?
قال المدعي: أنت لا تساعد على بيع الشقق الفاخرة.The prosecutor said: You do not help sell luxury apartments.
قال الاسم: أنا ساعدت الناس على العودة إلى بيوتهم قرونًا.The name said: For centuries, I helped people return to their homes.
قال المدعي: نطقك سهل، وهذا يقلل الغموض التسويقي.The prosecutor said: You are easy to pronounce, which reduces marketing mystique.
قال الاسم: خُلقت الأسماء لتهدي الناس، لا لتضللهم.The name replied: Names were created to guide people, not to mislead them.
قال القاضي: هل لديك بدائل حديثة؟The judge asked: Do you have modern alternatives?
فتح الاسم حقيبته وأخرج منها:The name opened its case and brought forth:
بوابة الياسمين.Jasmine Gate.
أبراج قاسيون.Qasioun Towers.
حدائق بردى.Barada Gardens.
ربى الشام.The Hills of Damascus.
بوابة أوغاريت.Ugarit Gate.
ساحات إيبلا.Ebla Squares.
سنابل حوران.The Wheat Spikes of Hauran.
ضفاف الفرات.The Banks of the Euphrates.
بيوت الغوطة.The Houses of Ghouta.
رواق تدمر.The Palmyra Arcade.
قال القاضي: هذه الأسماء تحمل معاني.The judge said: These names carry meanings.
قال الاسم: لهذا السبب جئت بها.The name replied: That is precisely why I brought them.
النهاية: المدينة تستعيد اسمها
The Ending: The City Reclaims Its Name
في الصباح، استيقظ الناس فوجدوا اللافتات قد نزلت عن الأبراج.In the morning, people awoke to find the signs had descended from the towers.
لم تُحطّم الكلمات الإنكليزية.The English words were not destroyed.
ولم تُطرد السريانية من ذاكرتها.Syriac was not expelled from its memory.
ولم تُغلق الأبواب أمام الصينية أو اليابانية أو الإسبانية.No doors were closed to Chinese, Japanese, or Spanish.
وُضعت كل لغة في مكانها الصحيح: جسرًا للمعرفة، لا بديلًا عن الهوية.Each language was placed where it belonged: as a bridge to knowledge, not a substitute for identity.
وتقدمت اللغة الأم نحو دائرة الأسماء.The mother tongue approached the Department of Names.
وضعت أمام الموظف خريطة البلاد.It placed the country’s map before the clerk.
قال الموظف: أين شهادة صلاحيتك للمستقبل؟The clerk asked: Where is your certificate of eligibility for the future?
أشارت اللغة إلى المدن والجبال والأنهار والقرى وقالت:The language pointed to the cities, mountains, rivers, and villages and said:
هذه شهادتي.This is my certificate.
أنا التي سمّيت الأرض قبل أن تُفتح مكاتبكم.I named the land before your offices were opened.
وأنا التي حفظت الطريق عندما سقطت اللافتات.I preserved the road when the signs fell.
وأنا لا أطلب احتكار المدينة.I do not ask to monopolize the city.
أطلب فقط ألا أُطرد منها.I ask only not to be expelled from it.
نحن لا نخاف من لغات العالم.We are not afraid of the languages of the world.
نتعلمها لكي نفتح النوافذ.We learn them to open windows.
لكننا لا نقتلع باب البيت كي نثبت أننا متحضرون.But we do not tear out the door of our home to prove that we are civilized.
ولا نحتاج إلى أن نضيف «سيتي» إلى كل أرض كي تصبح مدينة.We do not need to add “City” to every piece of land for it to become a city.
فالمدينة لا تصنعها الكلمة الأجنبية.A foreign word does not create a city.
المدينة يصنعها الإنسان والعدالة والذاكرة والجمال.A city is created by people, justice, memory, and beauty.
أنا لا أخاف على لغتي من الإنكليزية أو الصينية أو اليابانية أو الإسبانية.I do not fear English, Chinese, Japanese, or Spanish for my language.
أنا أخاف عليها من أبنائها عندما يظنون أن المستقبل لا ينطق بلغتهم.I fear for it when its own children believe the future cannot speak their language.
وأخاف على مدينتي من يوم يصبح فيه اسمها أغلى من ذاكرتها.And I fear for my city when its name becomes more valuable than its memory.
فالمدينة التي تستعير اسمها قد تستعير وجهها.A city that borrows its name may also borrow its face.
والمدينة التي تستعير وجهها قد تنسى روحها.A city that borrows its face may forget its soul.
والمدينة التي تنسى روحها تتحول إلى مشروع عقاري كبير.A city that forgets its soul becomes a vast real-estate project.
أبراجها عالية، لكن ذاكرتها مدفونة تحتها.Its towers are tall, but its memory lies buried beneath them.
لهذا أقول: تعلموا جميع لغات العالم.That is why I say: Learn all the languages of the world.
لكن عندما تسمّون بيتكم، اسألوا أرضه أولًا.But when naming your home, ask its land first.
فقد يكون تحت الإسمنت اسم ينتظر من ينقذه.Beneath the concrete, a name may be waiting to be saved.
وقد يكون بناء الهوية أبسط مما نتصور.Rebuilding identity may be simpler than we imagine.
قد يبدأ بلافتة تعرف أين تقف.It may begin with a sign that knows where it stands.
واسم لا يستحي من لغته.And a name that is not ashamed of its language.
