كمعماري، لا أرى في نُصب لنكولن مجرد مبنى تذكاري.

As an architect, I do not see the Lincoln Memorial as merely a monument.

أرى سؤالًا محفورًا في الرخام الأبيض.

I see a question carved into white

marble.

أرى حوارًا طويلًا بين السلطة والضمير.

I see a long dialogue between power and conscience.

وأرى أمةً تحاول أن تتذكر أفضل ما فيها.

And I see a nation trying to remember the best within itself.

يقف النُصب على طرف الحوض العاكس.

The memorial stands at the edge

of the Reflecting Pool.

كأنه مرآةٌ تنظر فيها أمريكا إلى روحها.

As though it were a mirror in which

America studies its soul.

ليس مرتفعًا ليخيف الناس.

It is not elevated to intimidate people.

ولا مزخرفًا ليُبهرهم.Nor ornamented merely to impress them.

بل هادئٌ كحكمةٍ قديمة.It is calm like an ancient wisdom.

وصامتٌ كقاضٍ يعرف الحقيقة.And silent like a judge who already knows the truth.

اختار هنري بيكون المعبد الإغريقي نموذجًا له.Henry Bacon chose the Greek temple as his model.

لكنّه لم ينسخ أثينا.But he did not copy Athens.

بل أعاد تفسيرها.He reinterpreted it.

فزرع بين الأعمدة قصة أمةٍ تبحث عن العدالة.Planting between its columns the story of a nation searching for justice.

ستة وثلاثون عمودًا تحيط بالمبنى.Thirty-six columns surround the structure.

واحدٌ لكل ولاية بقيت ضمن الاتحاد عند وفاة لنكولن.One for every state that remained in the Union when Lincoln died.

كل عمودٍ ليس عنصرًا إنشائيًا فحسب.Each column is more than a structural element.

إنه شاهدٌ على لحظة تاريخية.It is a witness to a historical moment.

وشاهدٌ على فكرةٍ أقوى من الحرب.A witness to an idea stronger than war.

فكرة الوحدة.The idea of unity.

وحين تصعد الدرجات العريضة ببطء.As you slowly ascend the broad steps.

تشعر أنك لا تدخل مبنى.You feel that you are not entering a building.

بل تدخل حالةً من التأمل.You are entering a state of reflection.

يتراجع ضجيج المدينة خلفك.The noise of the city fades behind you.

ويبدأ الصمت بالكلام.And silence begins to speak.

في الداخل يجلس أبراهام لنكولن.Inside sits Abraham Lincoln.

لا يقف كالجنرالات فوق الخيول.He does not stand like generals upon horses.

ولا يرفع سيفًا.Nor does he raise a sword.

بل يجلس.He sits.

يفكر.Thinking.

يتأمل.Reflecting.

يحمل على كتفيه ثقل أمة كاملة.Carrying upon his shoulders the weight of an entire nation.

وجهه ليس وجه منتصر.His face is not the face of a conqueror.

بل وجه إنسان عرف الألم.It is the face of a man who knew pain.

وعرف أن الحرية لها ثمن.And knew that freedom has a price.

وعرف أن العدالة لا تأتي بسهولة.And knew that justice never comes easily.

هذا التمثال ليس تمجيدًا للقوة.This statue is not a celebration of power.

بل تمجيد للمسؤولية.It is a celebration of responsibility.

ولذلك يبدو عظيمًا.And that is why it feels great.

فالعظمة الحقيقية ليست في السيطرة.True greatness is not found in domination.

بل في القدرة على خدمة الآخرين.But in the ability to serve others.

الضوء الذي يتسلل من بين الأعمدة.The light filtering through the columns.

ومن السقف الهندسي العميق.And through the deep geometric ceiling.

لا يخلق مشهدًا مسرحيًا.Does not create a theatrical spectacle.

بل يخلق خشوعًا مدنيًا نادرًا.It creates a rare civic reverence.

كأن الضوء نفسه يطلب من الزائر أن يصمت.As if the light itself asks the visitor to be silent.

وأن يصغي إلى التاريخ.And listen to history.

النقش فوق التمثال يبدأ بكلمات بسيطة.The inscription above the statue begins with simple words.

في هذا المعبد.In this temple.

وليس صدفة أن تُستخدم كلمة معبد.It is no accident that the word temple is used.

فالمكان ليس مخصصًا لعبادة شخص.For the place is not meant for worshiping a person.

بل لاحترام فكرة.But for honoring an idea.

فكرة الحرية.The idea of freedom.

وفكرة المساواة.The idea of equality.

وفكرة الكرامة الإنسانية.The idea of human dignity.

النصب يعلمنا درسًا معماريًا عظيمًا.The memorial teaches us a profound architectural lesson.

أن العمارة الكلاسيكية ليست أسلوبًا ميتًا.That classical architecture is not a dead style.

بل لغة يمكن أن تولد من جديد.It is a language that can be reborn.

حين تُستخدم لخدمة قيم إنسانية.When used in service of human values.

هنا لا تمجد الأعمدة إمبراطورًا.Here the columns do not glorify an emperor.

ولا تمجد جيشًا.Nor glorify an army.

بل تمجد فكرة أن البشر متساوون أمام القانون.They honor the idea that all people are equal before the law.

وحين يقف الزائر أمام لنكولن.And when a visitor stands before Lincoln.

يصبح جزءًا من العمارة نفسها.He becomes part of the architecture itself.

جزءًا من المشهد.Part of the composition.

وجزءًا من السؤال.Part of the question.

هل ما زلنا أوفياء لتلك المبادئ؟Are we still faithful to those principles?

وهل نستحق التضحيات التي قُدمت من أجلها؟Do we deserve the sacrifices made for them?

إن نُصب لنكولن ليس مجرد حجرٍ أبيض.The Lincoln Memorial is not merely white stone.

بل ضميرٌ معماري.It is an architectural conscience.

ومدرسةٌ في التواضع والقوة.A school of humility and strength.

ومكانٌ يذكّرنا أن أعظم القادة.A place reminding us that the greatest leaders.

هم الذين تركوا خلفهم أفكارًا.Are those who left behind ideas.

لا قصورًا.Not palaces.

وأن أعمق العمارة.And that the deepest architecture.

هي تلك التي تجعل الإنسان يتأمل نفسه.Is that which compels people to reflect upon themselves.

قبل أن يتأمل المبنى.Before they admire the building.
