PRAGMATISM IN ARCHITECTURE AND THE ARTS, AND ITS EXTENSION IN ISLAMIC ARCHITECTURE

في كل عصرٍ سؤالٌ أساسي.

Every age asks a question.

لماذا نبني؟

Why do we build?

ولمن نبني؟

And for whom?

وهل الجمال غاية مستقلة؟Is beauty an independent goal?

أم وسيلة لخدمة الإنسان؟Or a means serving humanity?

هنا تبدأ البراغماتية.Here pragmatism begins.

ليس كفلسفةٍ مجردة.Not as abstract philosophy.

بل كطريقةٍ لفهم الحياة.But as understanding life.

البراغماتية تقول ببساطة.Pragmatism simply says.

الحقيقة تُختبر بالفعل.Truth is tested through action.

والفكرة تُقاس بنتائجها.Ideas are measured by outcomes.

والمعنى يظهر بالتجربة.Meaning appears through experience.

لا بالتأمل وحده.Not contemplation alone.

في العمارة تحديدًا.In architecture especially.

تكتسب الفكرة بعدًا ماديًا.Ideas gain material form.

فالجدران ليست نظريات.Walls are not theories.

والسقوف ليست خطابات.Roofs are not speeches.

والمباني لا تُختبر بالكلمات.Buildings are not tested verbally.

بل بالحياة داخلها.But by life within them.

المعمار البراغماتي يسأل دائمًا.The pragmatic architect asks.

هل يخدم المكان الإنسان؟Does the place serve people?

هل يوفر الراحة والأمان؟Does it provide comfort?

هل يستجيب للمناخ؟Does it answer climate?

هل يحترم الثقافة المحلية؟Does it respect culture?

هذه الأسئلة تسبق الشكل.These questions precede form.

وتسبق الزخرفة أحيانًا.And sometimes ornament.

في القرن العشرين.In the twentieth century.

برز هذا الاتجاه بقوة.This approach became influential.

عند لو كوربوزييه.With Le Corbusier.

وعند فرانك لويد رايت.And Frank Lloyd Wright.

وعند معماريين كثيرين.And many architects.

أصبحت الوظيفة أساس التصميم.Function became design's foundation.

وأصبح الإنسان مركز العملية.Humanity became the center.

لكن البراغماتية الحقيقية.Yet true pragmatism.

لا تعني إلغاء الجمال.Does not eliminate beauty.

ولا تعني الفقر البصري.Nor visual poverty.

بل تعني أن الجمال.It means beauty.

يولد من الحاجة.Can emerge from need.

ومن الفهم العميق للمكان.From deep understanding.

وفي الفنون أيضًا.In the arts as well.

حدث تحول مشابه.A similar transformation occurred.

لم يعد الفنان مقلدًا.Artists stopped imitating.

بل أصبح باحثًا ومجربًا.Becoming explorers and experimenters.

أصبحت الفكرة مركز العمل.Ideas became central.

وأصبح التأثير هدفًا.Impact became important.

وصار الفن حوارًا.Art became dialogue.

مع الواقع والإنسان.With reality and humanity.

الفن البراغماتي لا يسأل.Pragmatic art does not ask.

كيف يبدو العمل فقط؟How does it appear?

بل يسأل أيضًا.It also asks.

ماذا يفعل هذا العمل؟What does it accomplish?

كيف يغير المتلقي؟How does it transform viewers?

وكيف يخلق معنى جديدًا؟How does it create meaning?

وهنا نصل إلى العمارة الإسلامية.Here we reach Islamic architecture.

أحد أعظم النماذج الإنسانية.One of humanity's greatest models.

للبراغماتية المتوازنة.Of balanced pragmatism.

فالعمارة الإسلامية لم تنشأ.Islamic architecture did not emerge.

من حب الزخرفة فقط.From ornament alone.

ولم تُبنِ للمظهر وحده.Nor for appearance alone.

بل انطلقت من الإنسان.It began with humanity.

ومن حاجاته اليومية.And daily needs.

المسجد مثال واضح.The mosque is clear example.

فهو ليس قاعة صلاة.It is not merely prayer hall.

بل مركز حياة كامل.But a complete life center.

مكان للتعليم والتشاور.A place for learning.

ومكان للعدالة والمعرفة.Justice and knowledge.

ومكان للتواصل المجتمعي.Community interaction too.

كل عنصر فيه يؤدي وظيفة.Every element serves function.

الصحن للضوء والهواء.The courtyard provides light.

والرواق للظل والحركة.The arcade provides shade.

والمحراب لتحديد الاتجاه.The mihrab defines direction.

والمئذنة للنداء والإرشاد.The minaret guides and calls.

لم يكن شيء عشوائيًا.Nothing was accidental.

ولم يكن شيء زائدًا.Nothing was excessive.

وفي البيئات الحارة.In hot climates.

قدمت العمارة الإسلامية حلولًا.Islamic architecture offered solutions.

قبل ظهور التكنولوجيا الحديثة.Before modern technology.

الجدران السميكة تحفظ البرودة.Thick walls preserve coolness.

الأفنية الداخلية تصنع الظل.Courtyards create shade.

المشربيات ترشح الضوء.Mashrabiyas filter light.

وتسمح بمرور الهواء.Allowing air movement.

وتحفظ الخصوصية أيضًا.Preserving privacy too.

كل هذه العناصر عملية.All these elements are practical.

لكنها جميلة أيضًا.Yet beautiful as well.

وهنا تكمن العبقرية.Here lies the genius.

الجمال لم يُضف لاحقًا.Beauty was not added later.

بل خرج من الوظيفة نفسها.It emerged from function.

المشربية ليست زخرفة فقط.The mashrabiya is not decoration.

إنها جهاز مناخي ذكي.It is climate technology.

والقبة ليست رمزًا فقط.The dome is not symbol.

بل نظام صوت وإضاءة.But sound and light system.

والفناء ليس فراغًا فقط.The courtyard is not emptiness.

بل قلب البيت النابض.But the home's heart.

هذا هو الدرس الإسلامي.This is the Islamic lesson.

أن الوظيفة لا تعادي الجمال.Function does not oppose beauty.

وأن المنفعة لا تقتل الشعر.Utility does not kill poetry.

وأن العقل لا يناقض الروح.Reason does not oppose spirit.

في زمننا المعاصر.In our contemporary era.

تواجه العمارة تحديات جديدة.Architecture faces new challenges.

مدن ضخمة بلا هوية.Massive cities without identity.

أبراج متشابهة عالميًا.Globally identical towers.

واستهلاك متزايد للطاقة.Increasing energy consumption.

وعزلة اجتماعية متنامية.Growing social isolation.

لذلك نحتاج اليوم.Therefore today we need.

إلى استعادة الحكمة البراغماتية.To recover pragmatic wisdom.

لكن بصيغتها الإنسانية.In its human form.

لا كحسابات اقتصادية فقط.Not merely economics.

بل كفلسفة حضارية كاملة.But a civilizational philosophy.

تعلمنا العمارة الإسلامية.Islamic architecture teaches us.

أن المبنى الناجح يعيش طويلًا.Successful buildings endure.

لأنه يخدم الإنسان.Because they serve people.

ويحترم البيئة والمجتمع.Respecting environment and community.

ويمنح الجمال معنى.Giving beauty meaning.

لا مجرد صورة.Not merely appearance.

فالعمارة العظيمة ليست الأعلى.Great architecture is not tallest.

وليست الأغلى تكلفة.Nor most expensive.

بل الأكثر قدرة.But most capable.

على خدمة الإنسان بكرامة.Of serving humanity with dignity.

وهذا هو جوهر البراغماتية.This is pragmatism's essence.

وهذا هو سر العمارة الإسلامية.And Islamic architecture's secret.

أن يبقى المبنى نافعًا.A building remains useful.

وجميلًا في الوقت نفسه.And beautiful simultaneously.

وأن يخدم الحاضر.Serving the present.

دون أن ينسى الروح.Without forgetting the soul.

أو يفقد ذاكرته.Or losing its memory.
