The Epic: The Syrian Human

ليسَ الوطنُ حجارةً فقط.

A homeland is never only stone.

بل محكمةٌ يحاكمُ فيها الزمنُ الأرواح.

It is a court where time judges souls.

كلُّ مولودٍ يدخلها…

Every newborn enters it…

دون أن يعرفَ التهمة.

Without knowing the accusation.

والتهمةُ الوحيدة…The only accusation…

أنَّه وُلِدَ في أرضٍ لا تنام.

Is being born in a land that never sleeps.

في سورية…In Syria…

لا تُقاسُ الأعمارُ بالسنين.

Lives are not measured by years.

بل بعددِ المراتِ التي نهضتَ فيها.

But by the number of times you rose.

هنا…Here…

كلُّ حجرٍ شاهدٌ.

Every stone is a witness.

وكلُّ شجرةٍ تحفظُ اسماً.

Every tree remembers a name.

وكلُّ نهرٍ يكتبُ وصيةً.

Every river writes a testament.

كأنَّ التاريخَ…

As though history…

رفضَ أن يغادرَ هذا المكان.

Refused to leave this place.

الإنسانُ السوريُّ…

The Syrian human…

لا يحملُ ذاكرةً فقط.Carries more than memory.

بل يحملُ مدناً كاملةً في صدره.He carries entire cities within his chest.

إذا ابتسم…When he smiles…

تفتحُ دمشقُ نافذةً.Damascus opens a window.

وإذا بكى…When he weeps…

اهتزَّتْ أعمدةُ تدمر.The columns of Palmyra tremble.

وحين يصمت…And when he falls silent…

تتكلمُ الحجارةُ عنه.The stones speak for him.

سألوه: من أنت؟They asked him: Who are you?

قال:He answered:

أنا ابنُ الطريقِ الذي نجا.I am the son of the road that survived.

وابنُ البيتِ الذي احترقَ ولم يحترقْ أهله.The son of the house that burned, yet not its spirit.

وابنُ اللغةِ التي هزمتِ النسيان.The son of a language that defeated oblivion.

كلُّ إمبراطوريةٍ مرَّتْ هنا…Every empire that passed through here…

تركتْ سيفاً.Left behind a sword.

لكنَّ السوريَّ…Yet the Syrian…

تركَ كتاباً.Left behind a book.

تركتْ جداراً.They left a wall.

وتركَ باباً.He left a door.

تركتْ خوفاً.They left fear.

وتركَ أملاً.He left hope.

لهذا…Therefore…

لم يكن السؤالُ يوماً:The question was never:

كيف بقيَ السوري؟How did the Syrian survive?

بل…Rather…

كيف بقيَ التاريخُ قادراً على ملاحقته؟How did history keep finding him?

فالإنسانُ السوريُّ…For the Syrian human…

ليسَ آخرَ الناجين.Is not merely the last survivor.

بل أوَّلُ الذين يعلِّمونَ الزمنَ…He is among the first who teach time…

أنَّ الإنسانَ…That a human being…

قد يكونُ أقدمَ من الحضارةِ نفسها.Can be older than civilization itself.
