The Institute of Islamic Art and Architecture: Where Art Meets Faith

أنا عماد درويش، مهندسٌ معماري من سوريا.I am Imad Darouich, an architect from Syria.

وُلدت بين بيوت دمشق القديمة وحدائق الغوطة.I was born among the old houses of Damascus and the gardens of Ghouta.

هناك تعلمت أن الجدران ليست حجارةً صامتة.There, I learned that walls are not silent stones.

بل هي ذاكرةٌ تنبض وأنفاسُ بشر.They are living memories, carrying the breath of people.

منذ طفولتي، كنت مأخوذًا بالرسم والفنون الجميلة.Since childhood, I have been fascinated by drawing and fine art.

كنت أتعلم كيف أمسك القلم كما يمسك المؤمن مسبحته.I learned to hold the pencil as a believer holds prayer beads.

وكيف أرسم الخطوط كأنها أبوابٌ إلى عوالم أوسع.And to draw lines as though they were doors to wider worlds.

في ثانويات دمشق درست الفن.In the high schools of Damascus, I studied art.

وفي الجامعة صنعت لوحاتي الأولى باستخدام رواسب القهوة العربية.At university, I created my first paintings using the residue of Arabic coffee.

كأنها ميراثٌ من بيتٍ لا يخلو من رائحة البن.As though it were an inheritance from a home forever scented with coffee.

عُرضت تلك اللوحات في معارض الجامعة.Those paintings were exhibited at university exhibitions.

وكانت البذرة الأولى لحلمٍ طويل.They became the first seeds of a lifelong dream.

بعد تخرجي، عملت في التدريس.After graduation, I began teaching.

وكنت أزرع في طلابي أن العمارة ليست مهنةً فقط.I taught my students that architecture is more than a profession.

بل شهادةٌ على حياة الأمم.It is a testimony to the life of nations.

درّست في جامعة دمشق، والجامعة الأوروبية، وجامعة القلمون.I taught at Damascus University, the European University, and Qalamoun University.

وشاركت في عشرات المعارض الجامعية.I participated in dozens of university exhibitions.

ورأيت بأم عيني كيف يولد الفن.I witnessed with my own eyes how art is born.

يولد حين يمسك الطالب القلم للمرة الأولى.It is born when a student first takes a pencil in hand.

ثم جاءت الأحداث في سوريا.Then came the events in Syria.

وغادرت وطني مثقلًا بالحنين والوجع.I left my homeland carrying the weight of longing and pain.

وجئت إلى نيويورك.And I came to New York.

مدينةٌ تصحو على ناطحات السحاب.A city that awakens beneath skyscrapers.

وتنام على متاحف الفن.And sleeps among museums of art.

هنا عملت في مكاتب معمارية.Here, I worked in architectural firms.

لكن روحي بقيت تبحث عن معنى أوسع.Yet my soul continued searching for a greater meaning.

كيف نعيد بناء الجمال في قلوب أبنائنا؟How can we rebuild beauty in the hearts of our children?

قبل أن نعيد بناءه في مدننا؟Before we rebuild it in our cities?

من هنا وُلد حلم المعهد الإسلامي للفنون والعمارة.From this question, the dream of the Institute of Islamic Art and Architecture was born.

معهدٌ لا يقتصر على تعليم المهارات.An Institute that goes beyond teaching skills.

بل يربط بين الفن والإيمان.It connects art with faith.

بين التراث والحداثة.Heritage with modernity.

بين الروح والعقل.Spirit with intellect.

هذا المعهد بيتٌ جديد للجالية المسلمة في نيويورك.This Institute is a new home for the Muslim community in New York.

ولكل من يريد أن يكتشف أن الفن طريقٌ إلى الإيمان.And for everyone who wishes to discover that art can be a path to faith.

وأن العمارة مرآةٌ لقيمنا وتاريخنا.And that architecture is a mirror of our values and history.

✦ The Workshop Journey ✦

في معهدنا، الورشات ليست دروسًا عادية.At our Institute, workshops are not ordinary classes.

بل أبوابٌ تفتح على عوالم جديدة.They are doors opening into new worlds.

كل ورشةٍ شعلةٌ توقظ موهبة.Each workshop is a spark that awakens talent.

وتزرع في القلب معنى جديدًا للفن والإيمان.And plants within the heart a new meaning of art and faith.

الرسم بالقلم الرصاصPencil Drawing

هنا يتعلم الطالب كيف يتحول الخط البسيط إلى روحٍ تنبض.Here, students learn how a simple line can become a living spirit.

وكيف يصبح الظل لغةً للمعنى.And how shadow can become a language of meaning.

وكيف تكشف الورقة سر الحياة في وجهٍ أو ورقة شجر.And how paper can reveal the secret of life in a face or a leaf.

الألوان المائيةWatercolors

لونٌ يذوب في الماء كرحمةٍ تنزل على القلب.Color dissolves into water like mercy descending upon the heart.

يتعلم الطالب أن يترك للون أن يتكلم بلطفٍ وسكينة.Students learn to let color speak with gentleness and serenity.

الألوان الزيتيةOil Painting

هنا العمق والضوء والروح.Here we discover depth, light, and spirit.

كل ضربة فرشاة كأنها ذكر.Every brushstroke becomes an act of remembrance.

وكل طبقة لون زمنٌ يترسّب في اللوحة.Every layer of color becomes time settling upon the canvas.

الباستيلPastels

نعومة اللمسة وسكينة اللون.The softness of touch and serenity of color.

هنا نتعلم أن الرقة ليست ضعفًا.Here we learn that gentleness is not weakness.

بل لغةٌ من لغات النور.It is one of the languages of light.

الخط العربيArabic Calligraphy

ورشةٌ تعيدنا إلى أصل الكلمة.A workshop that returns us to the origin of the word.

إلى أول وحي نزل: اقرأ.To the first revelation: Read.

الحرف يتحول إلى بناء.The letter becomes architecture.

والكلمة إلى قبة.The word becomes a dome.

والآية إلى نافذةٍ من نور.And the verse becomes a window of light.

الأرابيسكArabesque

إنه رياضيات الجمال.It is the mathematics of beauty.

دوائر ومثمّنات ونجوم.Circles, octagons, and stars.

لكنها ليست أرقامًا باردة.Yet they are not cold numbers.

بل نغماتٌ روحية تذكّرنا بالسماء.They are spiritual harmonies that remind us of the heavens.

SketchUp وLumionSketchUp and Lumion

نأخذ التقنية الحديثة ونحوّلها إلى لغةٍ للإبداع.We take modern technology and transform it into a language of creativity.

نبني المساجد قبل أن تُبنى.We build mosques before they are constructed.

ونرى الساحات قبل أن تُشيّد.We envision plazas before they rise.

ليكتشف الطالب أن التكنولوجيا يمكن أن تخدم القيم والجمال.Students discover that technology can serve values and beauty.

صوت العصر الرقمي.The voice of the digital age.

نعلّم أبناءنا ألا تبتلعهم وسائل التواصل.We teach our youth not to be consumed by social media.

بل أن يستخدموها لنشر رسائل الفن والإيمان.Instead, they use it to share messages of art and faith.

المنظور والخداع البصريPerspective and Optical Illusion

نكشف للطالب سر العمق.We reveal the secret of depth.

كيف يتحول السطح إلى فضاء.How a surface becomes space.

وكيف تصبح الورقة نافذةً إلى عالم آخر.And how paper becomes a window into another world.

النحت والنقشSculpture and Carving

في الطين والحجر نترك الأثر.In clay and stone, we leave our mark.

اليد هنا تصبح لسانًا آخر.Here, the hand becomes another language.

تحفر الكلمة وتنقش الدعاء.It carves the word and engraves the prayer.

وتحوّل التراب إلى أثرٍ خالد.And transforms earth into a lasting memory.

المساجد العشر الكبرىTen Great Mosques

رحلةٌ بين مكة والمدينة وإسطنبول والمغرب وماليزيا.A journey through Mecca, Medina, Istanbul, Morocco, and Malaysia.

ليتعلم الطالب أن المسجد ليس مجرد جدران.Students learn that a mosque is more than walls.

بل هو قلب أمة.It is the heart of a nation.

والألم إلى لوحةٍ لا تموت.And pain into artwork that endures.

نتعرف على أعظم رسامي أمتنا.We discover some of the greatest painters of our Arab world.

من لؤي كيالي إلى فاتح المدرس.From Louay Kayali to Fateh al-Moudarres.

ونتعلم كيف نكمل ما بدأوه.And we learn how to continue what they began.

ليتعلموا الصبر في رسم خط.So they may learn patience through drawing a line.

والدهشة في تلوين زهرة.Wonder through coloring a flower.

والسكينة في كتابة «بسم الله» بخط عربي متقن.And serenity through writing “Bismillah” in beautiful Arabic calligraphy.

الرسم يصبح وسيلةً لفهم الظل والنور.Drawing becomes a way to understand shadow and light.

والخط العربي يصبح ذكرًا ودعاء.Arabic calligraphy becomes remembrance and prayer.

والعمارة تصبح شهادةً على حضارة كاملة.Architecture becomes testimony to an entire civilization.

والزخرفة الإسلامية تصبح تسبيحًا بالنور والألوان.Islamic ornament becomes glorification through light and color.

نحن هنا لنُعدّ جيلًا لا يخاف من أبواب الفنون.We are here to raise a generation unafraid of the doors of art.

بل يدخلها بثقةٍ من باب الإيمان.A generation that enters them confidently through faith.

جيلًا يعرف أن الفن ليس ترفًا.A generation that knows art is not a luxury.

بل رسالة.It is a message.

جيلًا يرسم عن الحرية في فلسطين.A generation that paints freedom in Palestine.

وعن الجراح في سوريا.The wounds of Syria.

وعن الأمل في السودان.The hope of Sudan.

وعن فقراء مصر.The poor of Egypt.

وعن المسجد الأموي وقصر الحمراء.The Umayyad Mosque and the Alhambra.

وعن نزار قباني والياسمين.Nizar Qabbani and jasmine.

وعن كل وجعٍ وكل أمل.Every pain and every hope.

جيلًا يجعل من المعارض والندوات منابر جديدة.A generation that transforms exhibitions and forums into new platforms.

يكتب فيها باللون ما لا تقوله الخطب.Writing with color what sermons cannot say.

وبالخط ما لا يكتبه المؤرخون.With line what historians do not record.

وبالزخرفة ما لا تصرخ به الميكروفونات.And with ornament what microphones cannot proclaim.
