When the Bells Fell Silent in Damascus

ما حدث في كنيسة مار إلياسWhat happened at Mar Elias Church

لم يكن تفجيرًا فقط.Was not merely a bombing.

بل جرحًا جديدًا في سوريا.It was a new Syrian wound.

جرحًا في ذاكرة الوطن.A wound in national memory.

وجرحًا في قلب التعايش.A wound in coexistence.

وجرحًا في روح المدينة.A wound in the city's soul.

لم يستهدف كنيسة فقط.It did not target only a church.

بل استهدفنا جميعًا.It targeted all of us.

استهدف إنسانيتنا المشتركة.It targeted our shared humanity.

واستهدف وحدتنا العميقة.And our profound unity.

واستهدف محبتنا المتبادلة.And our mutual love.

استهدف تاريخًا طويلًا.It targeted a long history.

عشنا فيه جنبًا إلى جنب.Where we lived side by side.

ترتفع فيه المآذن.Where minarets rise.

إلى جوار الأجراس.Beside church bells.

وتلتقي فيه الدعوات.Where prayers meet.

تحت سماء واحدة.Beneath one sky.

في كل مرةٍ تقع مأساة.Whenever tragedy strikes.

يُطلب من المسلمين التبرير.Muslims are asked to explain.

ويُطلب منهم الاعتذار.They are asked to apologize.

ويُطلب منهم الإثبات.They are asked to prove.

أنهم ليسوا مذنبين.That they are innocent.

وكأنهم متهمون مسبقًا.As though guilty by default.

وكأن دينهم في قفص اتهام.As though their faith stands trial.

أما المجرمون الحقيقيون.While the true criminals.

فيختبئون خلف الدماء.Hide behind bloodshed.

لقد تعبنا من ذلك.We are tired of this.

تعبنا بصدق وعمق.Truly and deeply tired.

تعبنا من حمل هذا العبء.Tired of carrying this burden.

وتعبنا من هذه الصورة.Tired of this portrayal.

فلنقلها بوضوح كامل.Let us say it clearly.

نرفض الإرهاب كله.We reject all terrorism.

من أي جهة أتى.From whatever source.

وتحت أي راية رُفع.Under whatever banner.

ونرفض التطرف كله.We reject all extremism.

في كل دين ومذهب.In every faith and sect.

وفي كل أيديولوجيا.And every ideology.

فالتطرف لا دين له.Extremism has no religion.

ولا أخلاق له.It has no morality.

ولا إنسانية فيه.Nor humanity within it.

كل من يقتل باسم الدين.Whoever kills in religion's name.

يسيء إلى الدين نفسه.Betrays religion itself.

وكل من يزرع الكراهية.Whoever spreads hatred.

يعادي كل قيمة مقدسة.Opposes every sacred value.

لقد عانت سوريا كثيرًا.Syria has suffered greatly.

عانت من استهداف المساجد.It suffered attacks on mosques.

وعانت من استهداف الكنائس.And attacks on churches.

وعانت من استهداف البشر.And attacks on people.

بلا تمييز أو رحمة.Without distinction or mercy.

لقد نزفنا جميعًا.We have all bled.

وبكينا جميعًا.We have all cried.

ووقفنا أمام الجنائز ذاتها.We stood before funerals together.

ومشينا بين الأنقاض ذاتها.And walked among ruins together.

ومسحنا الدموع نفسها.And wiped the same tears.

عن وجوه بعضنا البعض.From each other's faces.

الحزن في سوريا واحد.Grief in Syria is one.

والدم في سوريا واحد.Blood in Syria is one.

والفقد في سوريا واحد.Loss in Syria is one.

نحن جسد واحد.We are one body.

إذا تألم جزء منه.When one part suffers.

تألم الجسد كله.The whole body suffers.

حين تبكي دمشق.When Damascus weeps.

تحزن حلب معها.Aleppo grieves with her.

وحين يُصاب حمص.When Homs is wounded.

يصلي دير الزور لأجله.Deir Ezzor prays for it.

وحين تُستهدف كنيسة.When a church is attacked.

يشعر المسلم بالألم.A Muslim feels the pain.

كما يشعر المسيحي بالألم.As a Christian does.

لأن المصير واحد.Because the destiny is shared.

أما دعاة الفتنة والكراهية.As for preachers of hatred.

ودعاة الانقسام والعنف.And advocates of division.

فهم غرباء عنا.They are strangers to us.

غرباء عن سوريا.Strangers to Syria.

وغرباء عن روحها.Strangers to its soul.

وغرباء عن تاريخها.Strangers to its history.

الإرهاب لا يبدأ بقنبلة.Terrorism does not begin with bombs.

بل يبدأ بكلمة.It begins with words.

وبمنشورٍ محرض.With an inciting post.

وبخطابٍ سامّ.With poisonous rhetoric.

وبصمتٍ يتحول إلى تواطؤ.With silence becoming complicity.

لهذا فواجبنا اليوم.Therefore our duty today.

أكبر من مجرد الإدانة.Is greater than condemnation.

علينا مواجهة الجذور.We must confront roots.

ومواجهة التحريض والكراهية.Confront hatred and incitement.

ومواجهة التطرف أينما كان.Confront extremism everywhere.

إلى أرواح الضحايا الأبرياء.To the innocent victims.

لن ننساكم أبدًا.We shall never forget you.

وإلى الجرحى والمفجوعين.To the wounded and grieving.

كل التضامن والمحبة.All solidarity and love.

أما الذين خططوا ونفذوا.As for those responsible.

أو برروا أو صمتوا.Or justified or stayed silent.

فالعار يلاحقهم.Shame follows them.

أما سوريا فستبقى.But Syria shall remain.

أقوى من الكراهية.Stronger than hatred.

وأكبر من الإرهاب.Greater than terrorism.

وأعمق من الانقسام.Deeper than division.

ستبقى وطنًا للجميع.It will remain a homeland.

ترتفع فيه المآذن.Where minarets rise.

وتدق فيه الأجراس.And bells ring.

معًا نحو السماء ذاتها.Together toward the same sky.

وطنًا للحياة.A homeland of life.

لا للموت.Not death.

وطنًا للمحبة.A homeland of love.

لا للكراهية.Not hatred.
