The Epic of Ash Cafe

سأفتح مقهى في آخر الشام… حيث لا يصل المارة.

I will open a café at the edge of Damascus… where passersby do not arrive.

مقهى لا يتزيّن… بل يبوح.

A café that does not decorate… but confesses.

جدرانه سوداء كليالينا التي لم يعُد أحد يراها.

Its walls are as black as the nights no one witnessed from us.

كراسٍي خشبية مخلّعة… مثل الأكتاف التي حملت البلاد وحدها.

Broken wooden chairs… like shoulders that carried the homeland alone.

وطاولات بعيدة عن بعضها…

And tables far from each other…

لأن بين السوري والسوري مسافة حرب.

Because between one Syrian and another there is the distance of a war.

لا مصابيح،

No lamps,

فالنور أصبح شيئًا نخافه.

For light has become something we fear.

شمعة واحدة فوق كل طاولة…

One candle on every table…

تكفي لتكشف الأوراق،

Enough to reveal the paper,

وتترك الوجوه في الظل.

And leave the faces in shadow.

يفتح فقط في الخريف والشتاء…

It opens only in autumn and winter…

حين يتذكّر التراب أنه كان دمًا.

When the soil remembers it was once blood.

ممنوع دخول المرتبطين…

Couples are not allowed…

ليس لأن الحب خطيئة،

Not because love is a sin,

بل لأننا نحن الذين أحببنا الوطن وحده، نحتاج مكانًا لنا.

But because we who loved the homeland alone, need a place of our own.

سأضع أوراقًا بيضاء جديدة فوق كل طاولة،

I will place fresh white paper on each table,

وأقلامًا من تلك التي لا تكذب.

And pens of the kind that do not lie.

وسأكون أنا النادل،

And I will be the waiter,

أوزّع عليكم كؤوس سوريا بلا سكر…

Serving you cups of Syria without sugar…

بكل سرور.

With pleasure.

هنا نكتب لا لنُشفى،

Here we write not to heal,

بل كي لا نموت بصمت.

But so we do not die silently.

هنا،

Here,

نضع حجرًا في القلب قبل أن نضعه في الأرض.

We place a stone in the heart before placing it in the ground.

هنا،

Here,

يتذكّر السوري أنه لا يزال حيًّا…

The Syrian remembers he is still alive…

ولو على حافة التعب.

Even on the edge of exhaustion.
