﴿ مَرَجَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ يَلْتَقِيَانِ ۝ بَيْنَهُمَا بَرْزَخٌ لَا يَبْغِيَانِ ﴾

The Epic of the Two Seas

“He released the two seas, meeting together. Between them is a barrier they do not transgress.” (Qur'an 55:19–20)

في فجرٍ أقدم من الخرائط.

In a dawn older than maps.

وأقدم من أسماء القارات.

Older than the names of continents.

التقى بحران.

Two seas met.

وجهاً لوجه.

Face to face.

موجةً بموجة.

Wave to wave.

وقلباً بقلب.

And heart to heart.

كان الأول مالحاً.

The first was salty.

يحمل ذاكرة المحيطات.

Carrying the memory of oceans.

وأغاني العواصف.

And the songs of storms.

وحكايات السفن الغارقة.

And the stories of sunken ships.

وكان الثاني عذباً.

And the second was fresh.

يحمل أسرار الأنهار.

Carrying the secrets of rivers.

وهمسات الينابيع.

And the whispers of springs.

وأحلام الغيوم التي ذابت فوق الجبال.

And the dreams of clouds that melted upon mountains.

اقتربا.

They drew near.

حتى ظن العالم.

Until the world thought.

أن أحدهما سيبتلع الآخر.

That one would swallow the other.

لكن شيئاً غامضاً حدث.

But something mysterious happened.

مدا أيديهما المائية.

They extended their watery hands.

وتعانقا.

And embraced.

لكن دون أن يذوبا.

Yet without dissolving.

في بعضهما.

Into one another.

فسأل البحر المالح:

The salty sea asked:

يا أخي.

My brother.

نحن نلتقي منذ آلاف السنين.

We have met for thousands of years.

فلماذا لا أصبح أنت؟

Why do I not become you?

فأجاب البحر العذب:

The fresh sea replied:

لأن الخالق.

Because the Creator.

أحب التنوع.

Loved diversity.

كما أحب الوحدة.

As He loved unity.

وأراد لنا أن نقترب.

And wished us to draw near.

دون أن نفقد أنفسنا.

Without losing ourselves.

قال المالح:

The salty sea said:

لكن البشر.

But humans.

يظنون أن القوة.

Think that power.

هي أن يبتلع الكبير الصغير.

Means the great consuming the small.

فضحك العذب.

The fresh sea laughed.

وقال:

And said:

لو كان ذلك قانون الكون.

If that were the law of the universe.

لما بقي نجم.

No star would remain.

ولا شجرة.

Nor tree.

ولا إنسان.

Nor human.

ثم ارتفعت موجة.

Then a wave rose.

كأنها منبر من ماء.

Like a pulpit of water.

وقالت:

And proclaimed:

انظر حولك.

Look around you.

الليل يجاور النهار.

Night stands beside day.

ولا يبتلعه.

Yet does not consume it.

والأرض تعانق السماء.

The earth embraces the sky.

ولا تذوب فيها.

Yet does not dissolve into it.

والروح تسكن الجسد.

The soul dwells within the body.

ولا تصبح جسداً.

Yet does not become flesh.

ثم ظهر البرزخ.

Then the Barzakh appeared.

لم يكن جداراً.

It was not a wall.

ولا سداً.

Nor a dam.

ولا أسلاكاً وحدوداً.

Nor fences and borders.

كان أمراً.

It was a command.

وكان حكمة.

And it was wisdom.

وكان قانوناً خفياً.

And it was a hidden law.

يحفظ الاختلاف.

Preserving difference.

ويمنع الظلم.

And preventing domination.

﴿ بَيْنَهُمَا بَرْزَخٌ لَا يَبْغِيَانِ ﴾

"Between them is a barrier they do not transgress."

آية قصيرة.

A short verse.

لكنها ليست عن البحر فقط.

Yet it is not only about seas.

إنها عن الشعوب.

It is about nations.

وعن الحضارات.

And civilizations.

وعن الأديان.

And religions.

وعن البشر جميعاً.

And all humanity.

أن يلتقوا.

That they may meet.

دون أن يفترس بعضهم بعضاً.

Without devouring one another.

وأن يتحاوروا.

That they may converse.

دون أن يمحوا بعضهم بعضاً.

Without erasing one another.

وأن يتجاوروا.

That they may coexist.

دون أن يتحول الاختلاف.

Without turning difference.

إلى حرب.

Into war.

يا رب.

O Lord.

كما حفظت البحرين.

As You preserved the two seas.

من الطغيان.

From transgression.

احفظ قلوبنا.

Preserve our hearts.

من الكبر.

From arrogance.

واحفظ أوطاننا.

Preserve our homelands.

من الكراهية.

From hatred.

واجعل بين البشر.

And place among humankind.

برزخاً من الحكمة.

A barrier of wisdom.

لا يبغي فيه أحد على أحد.

Where none transgresses against another.

﴿ مَرَجَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ يَلْتَقِيَانِ ۝ بَيْنَهُمَا بَرْزَخٌ لَا يَبْغِيَانِ ﴾

"He released the two seas, meeting together. Between them is a barrier they do not transgress."

ومنذ آلاف السنين.

And for thousands of years.

ما زال البحران.

The two seas still meet.

وما زال البرزخ قائماً.

And the barrier still stands.

وما زال الكون.

And the universe still whispers.

يهمس للإنسان:

To humanity:

تعلم من الماء.

Learn from the water.

اقترب... دون أن تبتلع.

Draw near... without consuming.
