The Hole That Swallowed a Thousand Years

في عام 1947،In 1947,

سأل الفيلسوف الفرنسي روجيه غارودي المفكر الجزائري مالك بن نبي:French philosopher Roger Garaudy asked Algerian thinker Malek Bennabi:

"لماذا استمرت الحضارة الغربية بينما انتهت الحضارة الإسلامية؟""Why has Western civilization endured while Islamic civilization declined?"

كان السؤال يبدو عادياً.The question seemed ordinary.

لكن مالك بن نبي رأى فيه كارثة معرفية كاملة.But Malek Bennabi saw in it a complete intellectual disaster.

لم يناقش الرجل في التاريخ.He did not argue about history.

بل أشار إلى الثقب.Instead, he pointed to the hole.

ذلك الثقب الهائل المزروع في الوعي الغربي منذ الطفولة.That enormous hole planted in Western consciousness since childhood.

الثقب الذي يمتد ألف سنة كاملة.The hole that stretches across an entire millennium.

ألف سنة اختفت من الكتب.A thousand years vanished from textbooks.

ألف سنة سقطت من الذاكرة.A thousand years fell from memory.

ألف سنة تحولت إلى ما يسمونه "عصور الظلام".A thousand years became what they call the "Dark Ages."

لكن الظلام بالنسبة لأوروبا،But what was darkness for Europe,

كان فجراً في بغداد.Was dawn in Baghdad.

وكان شروقاً في دمشق.It was sunrise in Damascus.

وكان مختبراً في القاهرة.It was a laboratory in Cairo.

وكان مرصداً في سمرقند.It was an observatory in Samarkand.

وكان مكتبة في قرطبة.It was a library in Cordoba.

بينما كانت أوروبا تبحث عن الضوء،While Europe was searching for light,

كان المسلمون يقيسون حركة النجوم.Muslims were measuring the movement of the stars.

ويكتبون الخرائط.Drawing maps.

ويؤسسون المستشفيات.Establishing hospitals.

ويطورون علم الجبر.Advancing algebra.

ويبتكرون الخوارزميات.Creating algorithms.

ويترجمون تراث الأمم.Translating the heritage of nations.

ثم يضيفون إليه.Then adding to it.

ثم يطورونه.Then improving it.

ثم يرسلون ثماره إلى العالم.Then sharing its fruits with the world.

لم تكن الحضارة الإسلامية جسراً فقط.Islamic civilization was not merely a bridge.

بل كانت مدينة كاملة فوق الجسر.It was an entire city standing upon that bridge.

لم تكن ناقلاً للمعرفة.It was not merely a transmitter of knowledge.

بل كانت منتجاً لها.It was a producer of knowledge.

ومختبراً لها.A laboratory for it.

ومصححاً لأخطائها.A corrector of its errors.

ومضيفاً إليها.And an innovator within it.

ولو حذفنا تلك القرون من التاريخ،If we removed those centuries from history,

لانقطعت السلسلة.The chain would be broken.

ولأصبحت النهضة الأوروبية شجرة بلا جذور.The European Renaissance would become a tree without roots.

وقصراً بلا أساس.A palace without foundations.

وسقفاً بلا أعمدة.A roof without columns.

فالحضارات لا تنبت من الفراغ.Civilizations do not grow from emptiness.

ولا تولد من العدم.Nor are they born from nothingness.

ولا تهبط من السماء جاهزة.Nor do they descend from heaven fully formed.

بل تتوارث الأمم العلم كما تتوارث الدم.Nations inherit knowledge just as they inherit blood.

فالإغريق أخذوا ممن سبقهم.The Greeks learned from those before them.

والمسلمون أخذوا من الإغريق والفرس والهنود.Muslims learned from Greeks, Persians, and Indians.

ثم أضافوا ما لم يكن موجوداً.Then added what had never existed before.

ثم جاءت أوروبا الحديثة.Then modern Europe emerged.

فأخذت من الجميع.And learned from all of them.

وأضافت هي الأخرى.And contributed in turn.

وهكذا يستمر النهر.And thus the river continues to flow.

جيلٌ يسلم الماء إلى جيل.One generation passes the water to another.

وأمة تسلم المشعل إلى أمة.One civilization passes the torch to the next.

لقد اكتشف غارودي متأخراً،Garaudy discovered, though late,

أن شهاداته العليا لم تمنعه من الجهل.That his academic degrees had not protected him from ignorance.

وأن الإنسان قد يحمل الدكتوراه،A person may hold a doctorate,

ويظل أسيراً لثقب صغير في ذاكرته.Yet remain captive to a small hole in memory.

ثقب لا يراه.A hole he cannot see.

لكنه يرى العالم من خلاله.Yet through it he sees the world.

والمأساة اليوم،The tragedy today,

أن ذلك الثقب لم يعد غربياً فقط.Is that this hole is no longer only Western.

بل تسلل إلى عقول كثير من المسلمين أنفسهم.It has crept into the minds of many Muslims as well.

حتى صار بعضهم يذكر نيوتن وينسى ابن الهيثم.Some remember Newton yet forget Ibn al-Haytham.

ويعرف ديكارت ويجهل الغزالي.Know Descartes yet ignore Al-Ghazali.

ويحفظ أسماء مخترعي العصر.Memorize the names of modern inventors.

ولا يعرف أسماء من مهدوا الطريق لهم.But not those who paved the road before them.

إن المشكلة ليست في الغرب.The problem is not the West.

فالغرب بنى حضارته بعمله واجتهاده.The West built its civilization through effort and perseverance.

وقدم للبشرية إنجازات عظيمة.And gave humanity remarkable achievements.

لكن المشكلة فيمن يظن أن التاريخ بدأ بأثينا.The problem lies with those who think history began in Athens.

ثم نام ألف سنة.Then slept for a thousand years.

ثم استيقظ في باريس ولندن.And awoke in Paris and London.

وكأن بغداد لم تكن.As if Baghdad never existed.

وكأن قرطبة لم تكن.As if Cordoba never existed.

وكأن دمشق والقاهرة وسمرقند لم تكن.As if Damascus, Cairo, and Samarkand never existed.

ذلك هو الثقب.That is the hole.

الثقب الذي ابتلع ألف عام من ذاكرة العالم.The hole that swallowed a thousand years of the world's memory.

وربما كانت أعظم مهمة أمامنا اليوم،Perhaps our greatest task today,

ليست أن نمجد الماضي.Is not to glorify the past.

ولا أن نبكي عليه.Nor to mourn it.

بل أن نملأ هذا الثقب بالمعرفة.But to fill this hole with knowledge.

حتى يرى أبناؤنا التاريخ كما كان.So our children may see history as it truly was.

لا كما قُصّ عليهم.Not merely as it was told to them.

ورحم الله روجيه غارودي.And on Roger Garaudy.

فالأول كشف الثقب.The first revealed the hole.

والثاني امتلك شجاعة الاعتراف بوجوده.And the second possessed the courage to admit it existed.
