انعقدت الجلسة الأولى.

The first session convened.

In a secret location.

Between Barcelona.

ومجرة أندروميدا.

And the Andromeda Galaxy.

وكان القاضي.

The judge was.

أنطوني غاودي.

Antoni Gaudí.

يرتدي عباءةً مصنوعة من السحالي والأصداف.

Wearing a robe made of lizards and seashells.

أما هيئة المحلفين.

As for the jury.

فكانت تضم.

It included.

أهرامات الجيزة.

The Pyramids of Giza.

ومسجد قرطبة.

The Great Mosque of Córdoba.

وكنيسة ساغرادا فاميليا.

The Sagrada Família.

ومعبد البارثينون.

The Parthenon.

ومبنى أوبرا سيدني.

The Sydney Opera House.

وبرج إيفل.

The Eiffel Tower.

ومتحف غوغنهايم بلباو.

وكان الجميع متوترًا.

Everyone was nervous.

يشبه نفسه.

Looking exactly like itself.

وصورة لناطحة سحاب.

تشبه ألف ناطحة أخرى.

Looking like a thousand others.

وصورة لمكتب هندسي.

And an architectural office.

مليء بالمربعات.

Filled with squares.

حتى أكواب القهوة فيه مربعة.

Even the coffee cups were square.

ساد الذهول.

The courtroom was stunned.

عندها وقف محامي الدفاع.

Then the defense attorney stood.

وكان لو كوربوزييه.

It was Le Corbusier.

يحمل تحت إبطه.

Carrying under his arm.

مخططات مدينة شانديغار.

The plans of Chandigarh.

في الهند.

In India.

وقال:

And said:

اعترض!

Objection!

من دون الخط المستقيم.

Without the straight line.

لما وُجدت شانديغار.

Chandigarh would never exist.

ولا فيلا سافوا.

Nor Villa Savoye.

ولا الوحدة السكنية في مارسيليا.

Nor the Unité d’Habitation in Marseille.

ولا نصف القرن العشرين.

Nor half the twentieth century.

ردت زها:

Zaha replied.

وهل هذه ميزة؟

And is that an advantage?

فانفجرت القاعة بالضحك.

The courtroom exploded with laughter.

حتى الأهرامات ضحكت.

Even the pyramids laughed.

فسقط حجر صغير.

And a small stone fell.

من الهرم الأكبر.

From the Great Pyramid.

عندها استدعى القاضي الشاهد الأول.

The judge called the first witness.

وكان حسن فتحي.

It was Hassan Fathy.

قادمًا من قرية القرنة الجديدة.

Arriving from New Gourna Village.

في الأقصر.

In Luxor.

حاملاً طوبة طينية.

Carrying a mud brick.

وقال:

And said:

أنا لا أثق.

I do not trust.

بالخطوط المستقيمة كثيرًا.

Straight lines very much.

فالطين لا يرسمها.

Mud does not draw them.

والريح لا تحبها.

And the wind does not love them.

والفلاح لا يحتاجها.

And the farmer does not need them.

أما الأرض.

As for the earth.

فتفضل الانحناءات.

It prefers curves.

صفق مسجد قرطبة بحرارة.

The Mosque of Córdoba applauded warmly.

بينما أغمي على برج سيغرام.

While the Seagram Building fainted.

في نيويورك.

In New York.

من شدة الصدمة.

From the shock.

ثم استُدعي الشاهد الثاني.

The second witness was called.

وكان فرانك لويد رايت.

Frank Lloyd Wright.

قادمًا من بيت الشلال.

Arriving from Fallingwater.

في بنسلفانيا.

In Pennsylvania.

يحمل شلالًا تحت ذراعه.

Carrying a waterfall under his arm.

وقال:

And said:

أيها القاضي.

Your Honor.

أنا حاولت.

I tried.

أن أجعل البيوت.

To make houses.

تنمو مثل الأشجار.

Grow like trees.

لكن المقاولين.

But contractors.

كانوا يريدونها.

Wanted them.

تنمو مثل الفواتير.

To grow like invoices.

ساد الصمت.

Silence filled the room.

لأن الجملة أصابت الجميع.

Because the statement hit everyone.

في مكان مؤلم.

In a painful place.

فجأة.

Suddenly.

انفتح سقف المحكمة.

The courtroom ceiling opened.

وهبطت مدينة كاملة.

And an entire city descended.

كانت نيويورك.

It was New York.

تجر خلفها.

Dragging behind her.

برج الحرية.

One World Trade Center.

ومبنى كرايسلر.

The Chrysler Building.

ومبنى إمباير ستيت.

And the Empire State Building.

وقالت بغرور:

And proudly declared.

أنا لا أعترف بهذه المحكمة.

I do not recognize this court.

فالخط المستقيم.

The straight line.

هو الذي جعلني أطاول الغيوم.

Is what allowed me to touch the clouds.

وقبل أن تنهي كلامها.

Before she could finish.

ظهرت دمشق.

Damascus appeared.

قادمة من بين بساتين المشمش.

Emerging from apricot orchards.

ومعها الجامع الأموي.

Accompanied by the Umayyad Mosque.

وسوق الحميدية.

And Al-Hamidiyah Souq.

وقالت بهدوء:

And calmly said.

أما أنا.

As for me.

فقد كنت جميلة.

I was beautiful.

قبل ناطحات السحاب.

Before skyscrapers.

وقبل الإسمنت.

Before concrete.

وقبل أن يكتشف البشر.

And before humans discovered.

كيف يحولون الأحلام.

How to turn dreams.

إلى استثمارات عقارية.

Into real-estate investments.

هنا فقط.

Only then.

رفع غاودي مطرقته.

Gaudí raised his gavel.

وأعلن:

And declared.

تأجيل المحاكمة.

The trial is adjourned.

لأن المشكلة.

Because the problem.

ليست في الخط المستقيم.

Is not the straight line.

ولا في الخط المنحني.

Nor the curved line.

المشكلة الحقيقية.

The real problem.

أن المعماريين.

Is that architects.

ما زالوا يعتقدون.

Still believe.

أنهم هم الذين يصممون المدن.

That they design cities.

بينما المدن.

When in reality cities.

هي التي تصممهم.

Are the ones designing them.
