ملحمة الصيام الذي يبحث عن قلبه

 The Epic of the Fast that Searches for its Soul

في كلِّ عامٍ 

In every year

حين يقترب رمضان

 when Ramadan approaches

تمتلئ المنابر بالكلمات نفسها. 

the pulpits fill with the same words.

حديثٌ طويل 

A long discourse

عن الصوم…

 about fasting…

وعن عدد ساعات الامتناع عن الطعام. 

about the hours of abstaining from food.

لكنَّ الصيام

 But fasting

ليس معركةً مع الخبز. 

is not a battle with bread.

وليس خصومةً مع الماء. 

nor a quarrel with water.

الصيام الحقيقي

 The true fast

معركةٌ مع الظلم.

 is a battle with injustice.

قولوا للناس

 Tell the people

إن الصائم

 that the fasting man

إن كان يعيش في بيتٍ اغتصبه

 if he lives in a house he seized

فإن جدران ذلك البيت

 the walls of that house

تشهد عليه 

testify against him

قبل أن يشهد عليه الناس.

 before people ever do.

قولوا لهم

 Tell them

إن من يفطر

 that whoever breaks his fast

على مالٍ منهوب

 with stolen money

لا يفطر على تمرٍ وماء

 does not break his fast with dates and water

بل يفطر

 but breaks it

على نارٍ خفية

 on a hidden fire

تشتعل في ميزان العدالة.

 burning in the scale of justice.

قولوا لهم

 Tell them

إن الزكاة 

that charity

ليست حساباً رياضياً. 

is not a mathematical equation.

وليست رقماً

 nor a number

يخرج من الجيب

 leaving the pocket

ليهدئ الضمير.

 to calm the conscience.

الزكاة Charity

قلبٌ نظيف

 is a clean heart

قبل أن تكون مالاً. 

before it is money.

قولوا لهم

 Tell them

إن أكل ميراث الأخوات 

that devouring the inheritance of sisters

ليس شطارةً في الحياة.

 is not cleverness in life.

بل جريمةٌ

 but a crime

تكتبها الملائكة

 written by the angels

بحبرٍ لا يمحوه الزمن.

 with ink time cannot erase.

قولوا لهم 

Tell them

إن المال الحرام

 that forbidden wealth

لا يتحول صدقةً 

does not become charity

حين يُعطى للفقراء.

 when given to the poor.

فاليد التي سرقت

 For the hand that stole

لا تصبح طاهرة 

does not become pure

ببعض العملات. 

with a few coins.

قولوا لهم

 Tell them

إن برَّ الوالدين 

that honoring parents

أعظم من آلاف الخطب. 

is greater than a thousand sermons.

وأن صلة الرحم

 And that keeping family ties

جسرٌ

 is a bridge

تعبر عليه الرحمة إلى البيوت. 

through which mercy enters homes.

قولوا لهم

 Tell them

إن الجار

 that the neighbor

ليس جداراً ملاصقاً لجدارك.

 is not merely a wall beside yours.

بل أمانةٌ 

but a trust

ووصيةٌ 

and a command

تركها النبي للأمة. 

left by the Prophet to the nation.

قولوا لهم 

Tell them

إن الطريق

 that the road

ليس ملكاً لأحد.

 belongs to no one.

وأن إزالة حجرٍ صغيرٍ منه

 and removing a small stone from it

قد تكون 

may become

أثقل في الميزان

 heavier on the scale

من خطبةٍ كاملة.

 than an entire sermon.

قولوا لهم

 Tell them

إن احتكار الطعام 

that hoarding food

جريمةٌ ضد الجوعى. 

is a crime against the hungry.

وأن الدين

 And that religion

ليس شعاراً 

is not a slogan

يُرفع فوق الدكاكين.

 raised above shops.

الدين

 Religion

ضميرٌ حيّ.

 is a living conscience.

قولوا لهم

 Tell them

إن ما بين الإنسان وربه 

that what lies between man and God

بابٌ واسع للمغفرة. 

is a wide gate of forgiveness.

لكن مظالم العباد

 but the wrongs done to people

لا يغلقها

 are not closed

إلا ردُّ الحقوق.

 except by returning rights.

وحين يفهم الناس ذلك 

And when people understand this

يصبح الصيام 

fasting becomes

ليس جوعاً فقط

 not merely hunger

بل ثورةً على الظلم.

 but a revolution against injustice.

ويصبح رمضان

 And Ramadan becomes

مدرسةً كبرى

 a great school

يتعلم فيها القلب

 where the heart learns

كيف يكون إنساناً. 

how to be human.

وهناك فقط 

And only there

يولد المعنى الحقيقي للصيام. 

is the true meaning of fasting born.

هناك فقط 

Only there

يتحقق الوعد القديم:

 is the ancient promise fulfilled:

﴿لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ﴾ 

“So that you may become mindful of God.”
