but mirrors

نرى فيها

in which we see

كيف يصنع الإنسان السلطة،

how humans create power,

وكيف تصنعه السلطة.

and how power creates humans.

نصف عبقري،

half genius,

نصف ظل،

half shadow,

فعلّمنا

and taught us

أن العبقرية

that genius

لا تحمي من السقوط.

does not protect from downfall.

وفي القرن العشرين،

And in the twentieth century,

وقف غاندي أعزلًا،

Gandhi stood unarmed,

ليثبت

to prove

أن الأخلاق

that ethics

قد تكون

can be

أقوى من الجيوش.

stronger than armies.

ثم وقف تشرشل،

Then Churchill stood,

holding words

كما يُمسك بالسلاح.

as one holds a weapon.
