دمشق عندما تتحرك الجهات الأربع معاً Damascus. When the four directions move together. أنا ابن دمشق I am a son of Damascus. نشأت بين أحيائها I grew up among her neighborhoods, وحفظت تضاريسها كما يحفظ المرء خطوط كفه. And learned her geography like the lines of my own hand. كنت أظن في طفولتي أن دمشق مدينة. As a child, I thought Damascus was merely a city. ثم اكتشفت مع العمر أنها كائن حي. ملحمة الجبال والأرض ﴿ وَالْجِبَالَ أَوْتَادًا ﴾ The Epic of the Mountains and the Earth “And the mountains as pegs.” (Qur'an 78:7) قبل أن يتعلم الإنسان. Before humanity learned. كيف يقيس الارتفاع. How to measure height. وقف أمام الجبال. He stood before the mountains. مبهوراً بقممها. Amazed by their peaks. يظن أن ما يراه. Believing that what he saw. هو الجبل كله. Was the entire mountain. لكن الجبال ضحكت. The mountains laughed. ضحكة قديمة. An ancient laughter. أقدم من التاريخ.

ملحمة الكون المتوسع ﴿ وَالسَّمَاءَ بَنَيْنَاهَا بِأَيْدٍ وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ ﴾ The Epic of the Expanding Universe “And the heaven We built with strength, and indeed We are expanding it.” (Qur'an 51:47) قبل أن يولد الوقت. People leave home intending to buy just one thing. ثم يعودون حاملين أشياء لم يكونوا يعلمون بوجودها قبل ساعة. And return carrying things they didn't even know existed an hour earlier. دخلتُ المتجر ذات مساء. One evening, I entered a store. كنت أحتاج بطارية صغيرة فقط.
